For 95% of all photographic retouching, get the Photoshop Elements program.. It's less than $80.00. The full Adobe Photoshop is over $500.00, and has features only useful if you intend to spend years developing the necessary skills to use. But Elements is fantastic and if you Google "PhotoShop Elements tutorials", there are many free great tutorials on line.

I say NO!

Honestly, I've using photoshop since 1997. I'm a trained photographer and graphic designer and I current use the CS2 version. I use it every day. It's a great program and I love it. But for a beginner, it's too robust and EXPENSIVE. If you don't understand dark room techniques and have a design background, you might be wasting your money. Also, CS3 is coming out soon.

There are two programs that I'm aware of that are budget conscience and more than adequate for the digital photographer. These are "Photoshop Elements" by Adobe and "Paint Shop Pro" by Corel. Honestly, I would buy Photoshop Elements if you are serious about eventually learning Photoshop. These programs share many of the same features anyways.

I also recommend that you take a class for photoshop or find peers that are comfortable with it. Just remember that there is no definite right way to do anything in photoshop. Anyone that tells you differently doesn't know what they are doing. There are literally hundreds of ways to accomplish the same goal in this program.

It's an awesome program if you make the most of it. Adobe also makes a great program Photoshop Elements, which is more user friendly. You can always test drive the programs for free by downloading a trial version from the Adobe website. Then, if you find you like it, you can buy it. I also love Acdsee which has some great features as well. Then theres Ulead Photo Impact, and several other ones that do similar things. Usually you can take all these programs for a trial run before you commit to buy.

If you want to explore the world of Adobe Photoshop without spending the big money for the full product, get Photoshop Elements 5.0. It is a tremendously powerful program and it only sells for $99.00. You can get it at http://www.adobe.com or any of the usual places you buy software.

You can use it practically right out of the box with the "Quick Fix" option and then you can advance into the full program, learning TONS about the Photoshop world as you go. Frankly, I think neither you nor I would ever explore the full capabilities of Photoshop Elements 5.0. If you ever DO think you are ready for more, you will already know much of what you will need to know about "real" Photoshop. They'll undoubtedly have a new and improved version by then. Since Nikon just came out with a totally new image editting package, Adobe will have to step up to the plate.

www.adobe.com Try the trial version!!

My opinion is that I dont like it! I only wanted it cos ppl were making cool stuff witth them!

My understanding is that it is only used by business ppl ie (photographers, marketing ppl) all that stuff!

I deleted my trial 3 days after i got it for 2 reasons

1. Hard to use .... seriously they have sites just to learn the basics! I am good at the computer but ifound it confusing!

2. It takes about 1 hrs to download and it requires 320mb of space! It really slowed down my computer!!

Last but not least my top 2 photo programs:
1.Photoimpact
2. Paint.net

Also if you just want to make up fun pictures try

www.glassgiant.com

There are loads like them around !!!

Hope I helped
IMHO i wouldnt get photoshop too much hassle for ordinary folk

On Adobe website, you can have a free trial version of Photoshop Elements for 30 days (It is "lighter" Photoshop but has many functionalities). It is a great piece of software but so heavy to run !!!!
