I had a friend tell me you can mount photos on the wall using foam and a type of gloss [?] - has anyone heard of this, and where can I get more information? Or better yet - how do I do it??

Thanks!

You can cut a piece of foamboard to the size of your photograph. Make sure you don't try to cut the foam in one cut. Instead, use a metal ruler or straight-edge to go over and over that same cut. If you go through it with one cut, you'll have jagged, ugly edges.

Then you can use a couple dots of white school glue on the TOP two corners of the photo to attatch it to the foam board. Make sure you don't glue the bottom edges because the photo will end up getting saggy and loose. It needs room to hang.

After you have done that, you'll wrap the foam board and photo in mylar. This is a clear thin glossy plastic material used to mount all types of art work. There are different thicknesses of it, .005 is too thick, buy .002, or .003. You can buy it at most craft stores. One brand name of mylar is called Duralar. Make sure you don't buy celophane, this is not waterproof and your photo may become damaged.

Measure the mylar so that there is at least 2 inches excess on all sides, then cut it. Place the foam board and photo in the center and then start wrapping the mylar on the top edge, then do the bottom one- keep it tight. Scotch tape works best, don't use the generic stuff. When you get to the corners, cut the part of mylar on the top and bottom edges that hangs over the sides. Then you'll wrap the sides, and you'll be done. It's kind of like wrapping a gift, but you're not going all the way around.

You can use a short piece of string to hang it with, or you can buy hooks made especially for foam board. Good luck!

How thick is the foam board? If your going to mount it on a protective frame there might be a problems because of the thickness of the foam board. Of course a frame with glass or a "glass sandwich" are better options to protect and display your photos but if you plan to put it on foam board first then I advice you not to use spray adhesive because because it might stick permanently onto the foam board and you might not be able to remove it when you transfer it to a better mount and frame. Use double sided tape and not the heavy duty mounting tapes. Before using tape option as your adhesive try testing your adhesive spray by using old photos. Only spray on the back side of the photo and let it dry for a while. When dry to a "tack touch" slowly mount the old photos onto the foam board. If you are able to reposition the test photost then you can proceed doing the same process with the photos that you intend to mount.
