"If we go back to the beginning we shall find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that fancy, enthusiasm, or deceit adorned or disfigured them; that weakness worships them; that credulity preserves them, and that custom, respect and tyranny support them in order to make the blindness of men serve its own interests."
-Paul-Henri Thiry, baron d'Holbach

Outstanding quote! I like the part about how the weak support the gods, and you sure got the weaklings--and by that I mean fundamentalist Christains--stirred up with this question. They are weak because it takes courage and inner strength to realize we are on ur own in this world and no fairy tale myth up in the sky is going to bail us out.
And the line about the tyranny that supports the gods is good too! After all, who has been more tyrannical than the Catholic Church and the right-wing Christians?
I'd like to read more of this man.

Blind? I guess that would be Paul-Henri Thiry. If it were true, What did Adam and Eve have to fear? When they were in the garden of Eden, they had everything and had no fear. It wasn't until they disobeyed that fear came about.

A Very, very cynical point of view. One that I happen to hold, incidently. Maybe I should clarify that: the idea of gods and being accountable to a higher power can have merit, if the message is positive, but the way that organized religion (Any of them) controls and fleeces its flock to serve its own interests and bank book is disgusting to me.

I like that qoute, it reminds me of a book. Maybe you should read it, it's called God's Debris.
And well of course we arr our own downfall, why wouldnt we make some figure appear in our heads to be our great leader. It might be weak, but hope is human nature.
Sorry I tried to answer it well.

I think this "Paul-Henri Thiry, baron d'Holbach" is seriously blind! He shouldn't have based his opinions of extremely false information!

I think he would have no way of knowing that since it is impossible for anyone to go back to the beginning. He's just another quack who thinks he's got all the answers.
