I am not a fan of pot, although I've known people who smoke. However, I am a fan of preventing Alzehimer's Disease. I read in a Newsweek medical column recently that mafijuana can prevent the tangling plaques that are a hallmark of AZ from developing in your brain. My interest perked up because my mother got it at age 52 and died at age 64. I am getting closer to her age of onset. Should I consider getting a medical marijuana card, or just wait to see if the symptoms appear?
Our family took care of her at home until the day she died; it was not a pretty death and I wouldn't want to go through that for anything.

Sorry, it wasn't Newsweek, but the article by Dr. Sanjay Gupta (the doctor who appears on CNN) is in the Nov. 6, 2006 issue of Time. He's not advocating pot for it, although he quoted the Scripps Research Institute as having recently released a study showing that it would stop or slow the progression.
I don't know about websites for marijuana cards for medical purposes. I live in California, where it is legal to smoke if you have a medical condition. yes, I suspect I would have to have symptoms. However, that's scary because my dad told me she probably had the disease several years before it was recognized. It came on very slowly for her, although others are diagnosed and die within two years.

Sorry to hear about your mum. You have to look at the facts. If medical marijuana can help with diseases like Alzehimer's, then the ends justifies the means, and you may have to re-evaluate your personal philosophies.
As for obtaining a medical mary jane card, I believe you have to be diagnosed with a disease or condition in which it helps.

...strange question...it's good that you clarified it with all the details.
Regarding that medical article, it's unlikely although stranger things have happened. Pot as far as I have read will only reduce pain, as far as the card goes, always attempt things before any symptoms appear, as by then it may be too late.
..all the best & good luck with it.

I have lost my great grandfather, my grandfather, and my father to Alzheimer's. I am 65 now and it concerns me every day. I am not a pot smoker but if there were conclusive evidence that it would work, I'd smoke away for sure! Can you even get a medical card for it at this point? Please post any websites with information on this issue.

Of course I would. It would just be preventive medicine. Marijuana is not physically addicting, mentally perhaps, but not physically.
PS I read that its best to take it before you need it, to prevent the worst of the plaque build up. My Grandmother, and all of my great-uncles had it when they died :/ Something else to look forward too!

I too lost my Grandmother to Alzheimer's and am losing my Father to it
I would smoke legal weed if it would stop me from losing my memory
you can get the genetic tests to see if you have the gene for it
I opted out.. since there is no cure yet
I do take ginko biloba and aricept as a precautionary measure

Must be the stress level. To me, I have problems having strong erections when I'm high on Mary Jane. He must not focus on this isolated incident & must get rid of his unhealthy thoughts. His thoughts are killing both of you!

I don't like drugs, but my grandfather has the disease and I see what he goes through almost every day, and it just breaks my heart. So the answer to your question is yes I think I would.

I lost my mother to this insidious disease.I also don't believe in drugs, but if pot would help me hold off the symptoms, I would consider it.
