I'm on permanent nights. Now, I have a routine and all the work gets done. I also sleep at least 8 hours each day but I still find myself dragging about 3 am. Do you have any suggestions on how to stay alert?

Unfortunately, you find what most people who work these hours do, and it is just your body reacting to an abnormal wake/sleep cycle you are on.

Our bodies are designed to sleep at night and be awake in the day. Since you are doing the opposite, you will have these problems. Many people don't stay on this schedule for long, I suggest you consider your options to save your health in the long run.

To help you in the mean time, I suggest using your mind; cross word puzzles, math problems, reading a subject that is exciting in a positive way, etc. Also, taking a walk for a few minutes helps to circulate blood to the brain, do some slow deep breathing too while walking. Don't eat big, heavy meals that are fatty in nature, those will make you sleepy. Eat light healthy meals, this will help you to not feel full and then get sleepy.

I am a permanant night worker and i have been since i was 16 years old. The way i keep myself awake and alert is a vitamin called "Pharmaton" in the UK. It is also good if you have an ill balanced or deficient diet. The vitamin is expensive (about £8GBP per 30 capsules), but really works. Some vitamins to keep you awake are based on Caffeine which is bad for you, but Pharmaton is based on Ginseng G115 among other ingrediants.

Hi redcoat71,
In morning when I would get home I'd due some chores around house before going to bed, sleep, then go shopping, laundry or whatever else you have to do
I used to work the grave yard shift from 11PM-7AM, I usually took a nap about 8PM-10PM, drink alot of coffee or caffeine & orange juice then I'd have snack like instant pick me up candy bars. Otherwise take those pills to keep you awake. You'll get used to being on the grave yard shift before you know it. Have a good day!

As bad as it tastes, I had luck with drinking Mountain Dew. That kept my butt from dragging many a night. I tried the pills, like Jet Alert, but the caffeine upset my stomach. They may help you.

I have been working nights for the past 3yrs. I have found drinking green tea and listen to the radio has helped me tremendously.

Keep moving!

If you find yourself tiring out you need to get some adrenalin flowing. Try doing some pushups or run up and down the stairs a few times. But most important, never just stand or sit around long enough to get tired.

Red Bull or another energy drink. Also if you can take a cat nap for 10 min that will re-energize you. I work in a hotel and I work all 3 shifts and both of those help me make it through my shifts.
