1. Athena (also written Athene) was the goddess of wisdom and the arts, in Greek mythology. [Minerva was the Roman equivalent]. The temple of Athena at Athens was called the Athenaion, and philosophy was taught here. This was the root of the Latin word Athenaeum, which was a Roman school of art.

2. In modern English there is still this word athenaeum (or atheneum in US English). It has two similar meanings:
a) an institution for the promotion of learning (like a literary club or a scientific academy);
b) a library, reading room or similar.

athena is latin, therefore go to dictionary.com and find the root for it
