5+9 is 14, or E in hexadecimal.
B+8 is (11+8) 19, and that is 16+3, so 3 and 1 carry
2+8 +1 carry is 11, and that is B
1+2 is 3.

So the answer is
3B3E

12B5 means:
5*16^0 +11*16^1 + 2*16^2 +1*16^3
=5+176+512+4096=4789

2889 means
9*16^0 +8*16^1 + 8*16^2 +2*16^3
=9+128+2048+8192=1037

In the hexadecimal system there are 16 digits used ranging from 0 to F, That is 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F.

The number FF would mean 15*1 +15*16 =255

i concur that 3B3E is the sum in hexadecimal. to convert to decimal
recall that B is 11 and E is 14, so:
(((((3*16)+11)*16)+3)*16)+14 = 15,166
