stigmata is the wounds of Christ appearing on a persons body
this is a little debatable in a few ways
A- that it is usually pious people who have this , which makes me wonder why God would make a pious person suffer in such a way
B- the wounds are usually on the palms and most people accept that Jesus's wounds would have been through the wrist

i am sure that if it does happen ... then it is much rarer than believed
but for the majority of people .. it is a mind over matter thing

Stigmata are a tool of demons.

The concept comes from the thinking that one must still suffer for your own sin or sin of others.

This concept is contrary to the real teaching of Jesus Christ, who said his work upon the cross was 100% complete.

I believe stigmatas come from demons and lead people away from true grace. They are normally found only in the Catholic religion too.

The stigmata are the wounds Christ received during his crucifixion as received by the most faithful. They appear on the faithful as a miracle, and can be one or all five wounds.

Some people are so united to the Jesus that they even look alike. Many married people after a period of time start to look alike as well but, this is a documented phenomenon where the wounds that Christ received are noticeable on these people. St. Paul was to have had these wounds and also St. Francis of Assisi and several Saints down through the ages.

This link is from the on-line Catholic encyclopedia and is all about the stigmata:

Here is another good link about it. This is about Saint Padre Pio:

Saint Paul in the New Testament writes about having the wounds of Christ on his body.

This link answers the question about why the stimata is usually on the hands instead of the wrists:

They mirror the wounds Jesus received at his crucifixion, and some people of faith have been rumored to spontaneously receive such wounds too.
