The following tips help prevent the spread of pinkeye.
Wash your hands before and after:
Touching the eyes or face.
Using medicine in the eyes.
Do not share eye makeup.
Do not use eye makeup until the infection is fully cured, because you could reinfect yourself with the eye makeup products. If your eye infection was caused by bacteria or a virus, throw away your old makeup and buy new products.
Do not share contact lens equipment, containers, or solutions.
Do not wear contact lenses until the infection is cured. Thoroughly clean your contacts before wearing them again.
Do not share eye medicine.
Do not share towels, linens, pillows, or handkerchiefs. Use clean linens, towels, and washcloths daily.
Wash your hands and wear gloves if you are looking into someone else's eye for a foreign object or helping someone else apply an eye medicine.
Wear eye protection when in the wind, heat, or cold to prevent eye irritation.
Wear safety glasses when working with chemicals.

Boy it is sure easy to see how "old wives tales" get perpetuated. Firs"pink eye" is not a medical name for anything. It is a catch all term that people throw around. If you have a cold it is not unusual for you to have reddened eyes and they can feel itchy and dry. You may even have your eyes stuck shut in the morning with "junk" on your eyelashes. If you do wake up with your eye stuck shut use a warm washcloth to soften the discharge then use a different area on the washcloth and wipe from the corner by your nose to the outer corner. The crusty stuff in the morning may appear tan or uellow but this is because it has dried on your lashes. The rule of thumb we used at the Pediatric Hospital where I worked was: if there is green or yellow drainage in the middle of the day then you probably have a bacterial infection and need an antibiotic otherwise clean it as I described as needed, wash your hands before and after touching your eyes. It is not contagious unless you rub your eye and then immediateloy rub someone elses eye with that hand. Germs from your eye can't miraculously float over to someone elses eye. You do not need to stay home from school for this either. The redness in your eye should go away when your cold goes away. If it is from allergies the treatment for drainage is the same and you can use allergy eye drops for the itching. Hope this helps make you feel better and also that it will help to dispell some of the other misinformation that is out there;

Go see a doctor who can prescribe some medication for it. You should not go to school until you see the doctor because it is highly contagious.
Incidentally, the best way to prevent getting pink eye is to wash your hands frequently because it transmits by picking it up on something and then touching your eyes. Be sure to use soap and rub your hands together because "friction rubs out germs."

Wash your hands, don't rub your eyes (those are both rules of thumb for all the time), and if you think you already have it than yes go see your doctor. Pink eye is contagious and the doctor can help you with stopping it or passing it on. Hope you do not have it. Good luck!!

Yes !, If you think you have pink eye ,you really need to go see a Doctor. It"s very contagious, and I've herd thet if you don't take care of it, and it get's bad,it can cause blindness !You need to get medicine! Get a statement from the Dr to show your school, and they will tell you to stay home! I've had it befor! And even with the medicine it's not that easy to get rid of! It like's to keep comeing back.If someone in your house get's it,you'll all just keep passing it back and forth! It's like the "Bug from hell"!

see a doctor, it is very catchy. he will give you some drops. You can get pink eye from any thing someone with pinkeye touches.
The germs are active before the person eye turns pink.

see a dr. as soon as you can, it doesn't go away by itself, you will be given drops to get rid of it. In the mean time, make sure you don't touch your other eye and use plenty of anti bacterial lotion on your hands to prevent the spread to others.
