There's a good chance that was an influence on the beliefs of the early Hebrews.

There was a lot of cross-cultural trade of ideas in that area at the time. For example, here's one story:

A child who would one day be king was born, but his mother couldn't keep him. So, she made a tiny boat and cast him down the river. The king's water bearer found him and took him in and the child was raised at the palace, and one day he became the leader of his people.

Story about Moses? Well, yeah. But it's also the story of King Sargon I of Babylon. The full story is at the link below.

The Bible combines many ancient stories and symbols from the region. It now known that it depicts certain historical events fairly correct, but that's not what the Bible is all about. The Bible coveys important and complicated messages but tries to do it using our human language with all it's deficiencies and inadequacy. When you feel good or you are confused, open the Bible on any page and you are certain to find a solution to your problem or source of inspiration to follow.

The Code of Hammurabi is a system of retaliation. An eye for an eye system. The ten commandments is a list of thing that "thou shalt not do".

Try the Zoroastrians, who took their beliefs from the ancient Egyptians. You know the Great Flood and the Apocalypse. Yeah it's all there.

But when you think about it, the ten commandmants are basically rules that everyone follows. Don't kill, steal, or cheat; I mean isn't that just common sense?

Many of the ancient civilisations had stories of the Flood, knowledge of God's laws, etc. in varying degrees of accuracy. God wanted it accurately recorded and so we have the Pentateuch (the Five Books of Moses), for starters.

OMG !
Hammurabi's Code is almost identical to the Ten Commandments ! ..........

Oh. Wait.
They're not at all similar?
What were you thinking !?

Maybe you should jump into a river, and according to Hammurabi's Code, see if you sink or float.

the mosaic commandments aren't applicable because previous people had similar ones? thats silly. three hundred years ago in countries all over the world murder was illegal. does that mean our murder laws are invalid, because we "stole" them?

probably.

you'll notice that there are many similar stories of creation, a flood wiping out all life...in MANY cultures that pre-date the old testament.
