All these years he has probably been living in his father's shadow in ways none of us outsiders could possibly ever fathom...

I can see where Sid is coming from.
Some people say you are never truly an adult until both your parents have gone.
Also, Sid has probably been expecting his dad to die for many years, and worrying about it. Now that it's happened, he doesn't have to worry about facing the loss.
It doesn't mean necessarily that Sid didn't love his dad, or had a bad relationship with him (though he might have done of course).
I lost both my mum and my stepdad this year. They had both been going downhill for a long time. Losing them was very painful, and this has been one of the most difficult years of my life.
But I have to say that now I am over the worst of the grief, I do feel a sense of relief sometimes. I'm no longer waiting for that phone call in the middle of the night. I no longer have to watch them slowly deteriorate in front of me. I don't have to worry that they're getting enough to eat or taking their medication.
Some people might think that sounds harsh, but I think a lot of people whose parents live to be very old feel the same way.

Hello
Perhaps Sids Dad being 91 had been ill for many years and Sid had to look after him. Or perhaps he was constantly worried about his Dads well being? Or perhaps his Dad had been a bully to him mentally and now he is free to be himself without the risk of being criticised for just being him? Could be a multitude of things.

Sounds like He was some kind of a drunk. Well in death old Sid thinks that he is over his drinking problem and now feels like a real person

It could be that Sid's dad was very controlling and demanding. It is very difficult to free yourself from such a situation unless you move away when you are young, or have a strong will.

there could be 2 reasons....one being his dad was not nice to him for most of his life and he can start living a normal life....or two, he has taken care of his dad through illness and has had no life while doing so, now he's relieved that his dad is at peace so he can get on with his life....cant think of any other reason but these 2
