I'm looking for the same thing for my daughter. The day after Thanksgiving, I expect to get a decent one for about $100. Don't buy a cheapo one. I bought my daughter a $30 one at Walmart one year and it was exactly what I should have expected for a $30 digital camera. We threw it away -- it was trash.

kodak c533 for $170, 5Mp 3x optical zoom, kodak has a different camera thats about$150, but for an extra $30 you get optical zoom and more features. and it take good pictures too

Canon a430 for $180, 4MP, 3x opt zoom, better than kodak, Nikons are really good to, but I don't know about prices.
all of these brands take SD memory cards, the most popular kind.

Sony has the DSCS600 and the DSCS500 for about $230, 6MP 3x opt zoom, great cameras, but the memory cards are more expensive.

your smart by not wanting to waste money on a cheap dig camera, stay away from poliord, vivatar and other cheap no name brands. and be wary of one that come in plastic packages that you have to open with a knife.

remember to include other accessorys that you'll need for it. batteries(rechargables about 25$) and a memory card, a 1GB sd card is about $50, or a 512MB is 30$. and don't forget a camera case 7$, so it doesn't break(I brought mine to a concert last night without my case and now the switch on the back messed up)
you can ask other family members for this stuff for x-mas or buy it yourself.

check out all the flyiers, cameras go on sale alot at this time of year, and company's will often bundle them with a dock station(to recharge batteries, downloading pics) or other incentives like a memory card. yuu gotta be quick, they can sell out in a day or 2. If it's just the camera on sale some people will price match, they can't if it a bundle or if they throw in a something for free.

BTW, all the prices I gave you are in canadian funds, if you in the US, everything will be much cheaper

Hasselblad isn't cheap, even with the used market such as it is, but it's the king of universal appeal. If a digiback is a big consideration, I'd definitely be looking at a Hasselblad. Someone else mentioned the RB67. They're great cameras, but I'd avoid them for use with a digiback. The biggest digiback on the market has a sensor that's roughly 4x4, nowhere near the size of an RB67. While you could still use the back on one, you'd be carrying around a whole lot of extra weight in your lens and camera body that wouldn't be put to use due to the size of the digital sensor.

Try the entry models from Kodak, Olympus, Canon, or Nikon. You should be able to get a fairly nice one in the $100 to $150 range. Maybe look for a model that's been marked down to make way for the latest model.
Don't forget to budget for a bigger memory card. The ones that most cameras are packed with are too small to be much use. Sometimes stores like Staples and Circuit City put cameras on sale and include a memory card in the sale price.

Talk your mother into not buying cheapest of the cheapest. I concur with Are57 in that look to spend $100 to $150. Probably closer to $150. Consider Canon and Kodak; and buy a card that holds a lot of memory. Tell your Mom cameras can run over $1000 just so $140,$150 doesn't look that expensive.

If you want best value, there are a couple of cameras at the sub $200 level. I'd get the Casio EXILIM ZOOM EX-Z70 in this case which rings in at $183 new, free shipping at dell.

You can go to any store like Kmart, Target or Walmart and look for a digital camera in those plastic bubbles (that cut your hands open when you cut them open) they are usually hanging near the memory cards. They have them for around 39.00 for a 3 mp with a viewing screen on the back. I bought one for my daughter for Christmas a few years ago....of course she lost hers and wants another this year...sigh.

You don't want to get the ones worth 10 bucks, because they don't work, try going for one inbetween 25-40 dollers for one that is Medium quallity and you have a budget!!

My advice is simple, make sure the sensor is not Cmose, but CCD. Makes a big difference. In my experience that are many fine cameras, but Kodak only uses CCD

Try a Kodak camera, they have ones that are really cheap and good quality. I would try kodak.com or a walmart or office depot usually has them
