If you are talking about setting the time, most makers of similar style clocks say to turn the hands backwards when setting the time. This is done this way to keep from unthreading the hands from the main drive and having them fall off.

You can set it by hand. ALWAYS move the hands forward. NEVER backwards. Wind it up in the two places (look for 2 holes) with the key, and you should be good to go. I've had one for years with no problem....except when I forget to wind it.
