If you are uneducated then you have an excuse. But cmon, we know of egyptian civilization that lived long before that. And we've found frozen people who are even older. What about dinosaur fossils, or stones that take millions of years of pressure to create (ie the diamond) or what about light from planets that we can see that are thousands of light years away. All this scientic evidence every where you turn and people are stuck on a 2000 year old book written by people who had 'visions' and thought the earth was flat. I just dont get it. Can someone explain

Man has been on earth a little over 6000 years. The earth itself may be billions of years old.
The Bible account in the first chapter of Genesis simply states the general order of creation. It allows for possibly thousands of millions of years for the formation of the earth and many millenniums in six creative eras, or “days,” to prepare the earth for human habitation.
The Bible writers who wrote it under inspiration and God's direction, knew that the earth was round. Consider this verse at ISAIAH 40:22---"It is he that sitteth above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in;"

The bible was written from the view point of man, on earth looking out into space. It does not say the universe was created in 6000 years.
It says that the Creative days (7 days) were 7000 years longs for a total of 42, ooo years.
How many thousand or millions of years passed in between each creative day is unspecified.
Adam was created Oct 1, 4025 BCE.
This is a Gregorian calendar and using the bibles way of counting time.
Since Adam’s creation, 6031 years have passed.
I am 48 years old, a high school graduate and a bible reader.

your right about the uneducated. i read science articles every day, whach history channel. have a picture of the great astronomer Carl Sagan hanging over my bed. i live and breathe science. i feel comforted i know the universe is far beyond our comprehention. that the earth has mysteries we will discover and study for centuries. and that the cosmos doesnt work the way we want. like faster then light starships. riligion comes from the fact that people attempted to answer the questions raceing through there heads but didnt have the comprehention or the tool to investigate, to experiment. a closed mind held them back and a fere of not achieving soemthing after this life kept them on a path determined to them by those in power. religion has grown from small cult spirit worship of 10,000 yrs ago to complex fabels, superstition and best of all, mind controll. controll there minds and conntroll there lives

the greater question is can the world move past religion. can we exist without our fabels that give so many comfort in their shallow lives. cna the mases live without having to have their lives centered around some figure to guide them as if they WERE mindless sheep needing a sheppard

Because they want to. Life is scary. Having an "answer" for everything on hand makes it less scary. These "answers" can come from anywhere, a philosopher,a book, Oprah. Does it mean that these people are wrong? I certainly don't think the earth 6,000 years old. But I do think people should belive what they want, as long as it does not interfere with my life. You have your beliefs, I have mine. Lets call the whole thing off.

True Christians do not believe the earth is only 6000 years old. God's days and years are not like ours, the creative days could be any length of time as we know it, making the earth billions of years old. And if you read the Bible text of creation you can see that one creatives days works runs into the next and this is where many get confused about the time.

Go figure, we have had civilization upon civilizations upon civilizations, that are not even known of, ones far more advanced then ours, the world is billions of years old with sacred writings dating back before that 2000 year old book that say the exact same thing only with different characters, some go no further than their front door, its a comfort zone. To each their own is all I will say, I am not one to judge or to jury, only to reveal.

the idea of a 6000 year old world is based on the idea that the 'years' mentioned within the bible(dictated by GOD) are actual years as measured today( a trip around the sun) and is based on the idea that an all powerful deity who predates the universe is using the same measuring stick for time that we puny humans with a 120 year life span(if we're lucky-if you call it that)use.
