A few weeks ago, I was having a discussion with a guy that I've been seeing for the past two months. The topic was really random - we had a discussion regarding our history. He did tell me that he had things he wanted to tell me and he hoped that I wouldn't be judgmental. I assured him that I am not that type of woman - I handle people on a case by case basis and I wouldn't want to date anyone willing to hide things from me.

Last night we we were hanging out and he revealed to me that he is on probation for the two years for a serious offense. I know that it took a lot for him to tell me that and I appreciate that. My feelings for him haven't changed and I will continue to see him. The problem is that I know my parents are going to be concerned about me dating a guy with a record. I come from an open, close knit family where we share everything. I have too much love and respect for my parents to hide anything from them. How should I tell them?

I would introduce him to the family and some family functions. Maybe after two or three functions have a sit down with your parents, and get their input about the guy. After getting their initial assessment let them know what's going on. But be ready for their answer and guidance either way. They only want what is best for you and to protect you. Best wishes!

Well, it's a thof issue, of course your parents have all the right to be concern about this guys past, moreover if what he did which you didn't mention and I assume was very serious. Maybe you can talk to your folks and let them know that you're a mature person and the decision of continuing this relationships it's just yours, that he already paid his debt to society and deserves another chance and if the flags go up you'll step away from his life for good.

Honestly, you are a good person for looking past his past, but the record is still important. As long as it wasn't for anything really bad like murder, rape, assault, etc. I think that maybe it's a chance that he could be trying to go down a better path. I just think that honestly it was better that you found out from him than from someone else later down the line. Also, as for your family, it's good that you are close, but if you really like him and they want to see you happy, then you guys should all discuss your feelings on the issue. If you feel that he is worth being with, do what you feel is right for you and ask them to respect you for it. Bring him around for them to meet, you all talk together, let him tell your parents about his past, and how he is trying to change his life for the best. Ask your parents to respect him for being honest and try to be honest, but nice to him when he does tell them. Like you said honesty is essential when you care about someone.

Walk and start over with someone you can trust. I am confident it took much for him to tell you, and everyone deserves a second chance but I would be nervous if you were my child. Serious record is not like a stupid mistake.

My ex did everything from armed robbery to selling drugs. I still dated him. His lifestyle scared me but at least he told me. Don't just walk inthe house and be like " Hi Mom and Dad this is my boyfriend so and so and he's an ex con!" No. More than likely your Dad is gonna ask and he's gonna tell. Don't you tell your parents by yourself let your man wear the pants and inform your parents about that.

Can you introduce him to your parents and let them get to know him before you tell them? That might help.

What kind of record? Maybe if it was something upbeat and had a nice tempo to it.
