When you put the question like that...it's extremely rude. In high school I was quiet and kept to myself because alot of the times, the kids were immature losers making idiots of themselves and I thought they were crazy. If you really want to get this guy to open up, just talk to him rather than asking him why he's so quiet. And if you're just being nosey and want to know...then just don't ask him, he'll resent you even more.

Yes it's rude. Some people are very shy and have a hard time talking to others. You putting him on the spot will only worsen his fears of talking to people. Rather than asking why he doesn't talk, why not try starting a casual conversation with him? Ask him what his major is, where he works, how he likes the course... just don't force him to tell you why he won't talk, because chances are, he'll avoid talking even more if you do that.

VERY!!! Perhaps you can just give this person kind looks and a few nice "hellos" and maybe you can wear him/her down. You never know what is going on in someone's life ... could be some awful things happening in their life with family, etc. Confronting them could just make things worse and the person would NEVER come out of their shell. Sounds like they need a friend rather than a confrontation.

Any first contact that is confrontational is rude, why don't you just introduce yourself and ask something about the class, then gradually move on to other conversation.
Why do you want to start off hostile ? Maybe he is cognizant of this hostility and that's what he is avoiding !

I wouldn't confront this person. I better approach would be to just ask, "are you okay? I've noticed you don't say anything..." and see what they say. It may be that they are just painfully shy, and don't feel like they can just jump in there and start talking. So try the gentle approach.

that is kind of how I am and i dont mind when people ask me. If you asked in a nice way, i dont think it would be rude, but if you asked them in a mean kind of "your a freak" way then ya thats kind of rude. but most likely they are either shy, they are those silent smart kids and they dont like to associate themselves with dumb people, they are not good at making conversations so they stay quiet, or they are depressed, or they just prefer being alone or keepin to themselves.

No, I dont think its rude at all. Maybe hes waiting for someone to approach him. Maybe hes shy.

People are shy. People don't feel welcome and comfortable in some settings. People are afraid of seeming uncool. -- Best just stay quiet if in doubt, they think.

I cannot imagine asking anyone what you suggest. It may not be rude, but unless you just want to fight, there's little point to it. I predict it will prove unproductive.

Yes, I think it would be rude, why don't you just go talk to him. He may be shy and unable to start conversations. If you don't want to talk to him than why do you care anyway?

some people choose to be quiet because they have a lot of problems in life mostly family problems,If he doesn't want to talk then it's fine, he has his own world, let it be.. respect his privacy, what is important is he doesn't bother anyone.. just smile at him whenever you see each other, in time you might get a chance to be friends.. just be more understanding.
