One reason that I chose the Canon camera over others was the fact that I have a 100-300 Canon lens from a film camera. However, when I take pictures with this lens they appear to be soft or there appears to be a fog compared with the lens that came with the camera. The lens is a 100-300 4.5-5.6 with a Rokunar UV filter on it. Any suggestions that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

look carefully to see if you have any condensation from moisture in the lens.

You failed to mention what brand lens it is, but keep in mind the digital imager on your Digital SLR Camera is not the same size as a single frame of 35mm film....therefore your "Old" Lens when mounted on your Digital SLR is no longer a 100-300mm but it should be the equivalent of a 150-450mm lens.....and the maximum and minimum apperatures will also change. Basically the bottom line here is, while you CAN use this lens with your digital SLR does not mean that you SHOULD. I suggest you invest in a newer lens that wont have issues like the one your experiencing. The Lens is now much SLOWER, therefore your going to need more light, or a Tripod, not to mention a magnification that high will look like CRAP (suprise) if it is not already a high quality lens with coated optics to begin with. You cant make something out of nothing.
