This is my opinion--my kids go to public school but I understand why someone would consider home-schooling!

Homeschooling

Pros: (1) You know that your child is getting the best education out there--depending on how you teach. (2) You know they will not be a target for bullies. (3) You know they won't be in a place with a possible bomb threat.

Cons: (1) They may be lonely. (2) They may not be able to handle real life situations. (3) They may become shy. (4) They may not be interested in socialization any more,

Public School

Pros: (1) They will be more apt to have friends. (2) They will have a "normal" life--some people think home schooled kids are "weird" (3) They will learn from experience ow to interact with people. (4) They will know that they have expectations that they have to keep up with to get a good grade.

Cons: (1) Bomb-threats (2) Bullies (3) Lack of good education because the school is not well funded. (4) Bad teachers and experiences.

Pros for homeschooling: Parents are one-on-one with their child's learning, i.e., subjects, skills, problem solving, etc. Parents will have readily available help with any questions or problems that may arise. This is a wonderful sharing among family and a goal that is attainable through co-operation and once fulfilled, family will share the triumph. All will gain knowledge through this experience. Also, parents will always know their child is in a safe and protected environment. The child will not, of course, be without socialization with other children. Just as if that child were in a public or private school environment, that child can still be involved in sports, get togethers with friends, etc. Parents and children can also set the pace and schedule for all that home schooling entails. Just be very sure that the homeschooling source is accredited. This is very important. I find through experience with my own children and those of other parents that homeschool that children are more learned and higher achievers. School dress codes are no problem. Peer pressure is no problem. Healthier diets. There are numerous pluses.

Cons for homeschooling: None

Pros for public schooling: It does contribute to the workforce for employment.

Cons for public schooling: I don't feel that it's an easy learning environment. There are too many non-academic challenges that a student must contend with that interferes with the importance of their academic learning. They have not the freedom that is so important through their growth to learn at their will. They are constantly under pressure with worries of security. As for socializing with other students, what do they learn..negatives or positives? Drugs, violence, sexual experimentation or free will to express morally their beliefs or opinions? Are the students encouraged or even allowed to say
prayer, pledge allegience to their country or their choice of religion? Doubtful.

I opt for homeschooling and parents and children sharing control of their future.

Home schooling can be a good thing, since your kids will get more one-on-one tutoring (always good) and you can tailor your scheduling and curriculum to your children's individual learning speeds, so long as you meet state standards for progress. And contrary to popular belief, your children wouldn't lose their ability to interact with their peers--in fact, a study done back in the 90's by Florida State University seems to indicate the opposite (although you can always let your kids do extracurricular activities like Scouts or sports if you think they don't spend enough time with other kids). And the different curricula help you learn what you are teaching; there are also home school support groups.
Having said that, I must warn you that home schooling is a LOT OF WORK. You must be disciplined and commit time, energy, and attention to the task. If you don't think you can do that, it would be better to leave the kids where they are...which brings up one other thing: will pulling your kids out of public school feel disruptive for them, or do they want this, too? They have to cooperate willingly for your idea to be successful.
Try contacting a home school group in your area; they can tell you all the pros and cons before you start.

there are several pros and cons to both but i cant tell you them all you will have to figure out alot of them on your own, but one of the cons with homeschooling is that your children do not have the good social environment which is very important in developing a young mind your children mya miss out on the ideas thoughts and opinions of other people which isnt nessacarilly a bad thing but its not a great thing either if you are really concerned for you children in a public school then you need to look into a private school where they will have a better education and it is safer, and if yo9u think you cant afford it then take a look at how much you pay a year for your car payment and then rethink how you spend money i personally dont believe in public school or home schooling i believe in private schools where the teachers are getting paid for teaching not just being in a class room

I can certainly understand your fear, however I think public school would be your best choice. It will take tons of your time to home school and there is a fear of not getting a proper education, unless you are a qualified teacher.Pro,s better education, credit wise....Cons,not educated to the fullest degree and holds childre back as far as dealing with problems ,and learning to make their own mistakes and decisions...you know if our kids are with us all the time we tend to protect them, which does not give them the chance to learn to deal on their own..Good luck Mom

Letting fear control your child's schooling will never help you make the right decision. Just because your child is "home schooled" at a local church doesn't make the child safer. look at what happened in PA to the Amish.

well homeschooling can be good so you can see how your kids are doing but if your kids are at a public school you have pros doing it for you. but if it really scares you then talk to the school principal i bet he/she can help. good luck!!:)
