I do not know why people think the West has always been a leading global power. One glance at a history book would tell you that the position of power shifts. For many years the most advanced and productive civilizations were centralized in the East, mainly China. No doubt the major force behind it was the Silk Road. The Middle East has a very impressive record as well. Muslims, in-particular, have given a lot in the areas of mathematics, science, and education.
Did you know that the modern concept of schools was first created by Muslims?

I think if Muslims would have found America first they would have become very wealthy and would probably have been one of the most advanced societies in the world, just like the USA today. Where is my proof? History! Consider Spain and England, all the riches they gathered from the America's made them one of the most powerful Nations on the globe. England, for a very long time, was considered very backward until they benefited from expansion. Spain benefited a lot from 400 years of Moorish Islamic rule, and thus, was not backward. Why? Emphasis on Mathematics, astronomy, architecture, science, and the list goes on. Just take a look at Granada in Spain. Great Muslim architecture still stands there, a living testament to the ingenuities of Islam. Do not believe everything we see on TV. No, I'm not Muslim, I'm Catholic. I just paid attention in my history class.
