well that is a very good question that u put forward.
in today's exceedingly urbanized and industrialized world there has been alarming increase in the water consumption at the global level. as a result fo which our stock of replenishable potable water reserves is going down.

these are some measures which may reduce our water consumption:

1. we can reuse our waste water for other purposes which can reduce our consumption of fresh water.
for example. the kitchen water which goes out as a waste can be used to irrigate our kitchen gardens and also to wash our cars etc.

2. we should take care that none of our taps are opened uselessly.
for ex. we should close the tap when we are not using the basin. also we should avoid using too much flush in the toilet

3. last but not the least, the industries should send their waste water to water and sewage recycling plants where this water can be converted into potable water by physical, chemical and biological processes

Install new shower heads that use less water. Don't run the washing machine until its full. Don't leave the water running white you brush your teeth. Install a toilet that uses less water per flush. Take showers instead of baths.

Landscaping with plants requiring very little water.
Odd/even days for watering, car washing.
Adjustments to showers and toilets to use less water.
More water-efficient methods for watering crops.
More recycling of used water for landscaping etc.
