ーさま (sama) is used for people who have higher range, are wiser or older than you. For example, kami-sama (god.)

ーちゃん (chan) is generally used to address to kids.

ーさん (san) is used to refer to adult people. Ex. Tanaka-san (Mr. Tanaka). -san should NEVER be used to address yourself, ex: My name is Tanaka-san.

ーくん(kun) is used to refer to males or teen males.

It's Japanese. "So-and-so-san" would be a term of respect. "So-and-so-chan" would be a term of friendship.

I think "sama" would be what a wife would call a husband, or signify that sort of relationship.
