I'm thinking of adopting a very young female pit bull from the rescue shelter & already have a 3yr. old male shih tzu. Anyone have experience with these two breeds together in the same house?

The most important thing to figure out will be if the pit puppy has a strong prey drive. If she does, your shih-tzu would be in danger. While a pit may be perfectly fine around other dogs that are the same size or bigger, and may be fine in a group with smaller dogs, if she has a high prey dirve, she could turn on your boy when they are alone or playing.

This is NOT to say that all pits are bad or that all pits are dangerous. But if it were me, I'd sure want to know this dog's history and how her prey drive is. *I* wouldn't bring it into *my* home with my toy dog and my cat until I could be 100% sure about it. But, the same thing would apply to a greyhound, a whippet, a rottie, a dobie, or any other dog that is known for a high prey drive. I've heard too many horror stories about toy dogs being gutted by their large 'safe' housemates that the owners thought had little or no prey drive.

My sympathies to you and your family. I'm not sure if this may be similar buy 3 years ago I lost my 2 yr old Papillon unexpectedly. During the week he had accidents peeing indoors which never happened and became irritable to a little girl once. Then one evening he had to go outdoors very often, I noticed nothing was coming out and rushed him at 10PM to an emergency facility nearly 2 hours away. He had a kidney stone blockage but on further look at the x-ray his liver was only 1/3 the size it should have been. Up to that point we never had a symptom, he had lived normally. They had to do surgury to remove a large stone and nicked his insides which started seizures that would not stop and we lost him within the week. It was devastating but the support from family and friends and others with dogs who sympathised helped so much. We later replaced him with a half brother who is 3 now, who has some digestion issues but no liver issues and is hell on wheels. We also adopted his father. We are blessed. Hold on to your memories and smile you will always love him!

my friend has a male Pit bull and a male Shih tzu/ Yorkie cross. Both dogs get along wonderfully, they are best friends. The Shih-tzu was about a year old when they brought home the Pit bull pup and he (the Shih-tzu/ Yorkie is definitely the boss) it is so funny to see this little dog boss the bigger dog around........hehehe.

You should have no trouble, keep in mind you need to bond with the new dog first before you bring her into the house. You can do this by taking her for a nice long walk, at least 1 hour, she will begin to understand you are the pack leader. Bring her into the home, and let the dogs smell each other, keeping all noise levels to a minimum. They may have a few spats at first, but stay calm and let them know you are the top dog and they need to respect you and each other. Good Luck and Thanks for adopting, you are saving a life.

It doesn't really matter what breed they are. It just depends if both dogs have been properly socialized.

I have a Dalmatian mix and we also foster dogs. Our dog has has 8 dogs sharing her house with her within the last 8 months and she loves them all because she was properly socialized.
