There are many scholarships out there and places to locate financial aid for college. The best thing about it is that most places to locate them are free to search and apply. I always recommend proofreading and researching (check the website about the organization and also their press releases) before writing the essay or having an interview for the essay.

First, FAFSA.ed.gov will help a student tap into need based financial aid from the federal government and the college itself.

Second, if you are student attending high school, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships available to its students.

Third, if you are attending a college or university in your state, search the state government website for college grants because most offer need based financial aid. Also, 35 states have a website where high school students can apply for college admission and state college financial aid at the same time.

Fourth, search Google.com and Yahoo.com for scholarships based on your race, ethnicity, college major, and religion. For example, certain college majors have organizations offering scholarships for those college students studying it.

Fifth, most college financial aid websites and some college majors list private scholarships from companies and organizations not associated with the college.

Finally, there are free membership scholarship search websites. Most are updated on a regular basis. I recommend joining several of them.

Good luck!

Honestly, the best thing that you can do is go to the financial aid office of the college that you are going to and apply for the scholarships there. Also, contact black sororities and fraternities in your area, they help minorities black, hispanic, etc.
