In the case of NYC, there a large police station right by city hall. Its also where most of the courts for Manhattan are, and this area is......in downtown manhattan, so thats probably where the downtown thing comes from

The up and down is also the way the streets are numbered in NYC, and correspond roughly to north and south, where south is downtown and north is uptown. I would say anything above 55th street or so is uptown.

You can also refer to uptown/downtown as a direction rather than a place as in "I'm walking uptown on 5th Avenue"

The East Side and West Side are delineated by 5th Avenue, or central park above 59th st.

The whole affluence thing is a little broken here, in NYC far uptown isnt a great area, while downtown is pretty nice.

Generally outside of NYC someone talking about downtown in reference to a city means the city center.....the core of the city

Uptown is Harlem, Downtown is Greenwich Village. When they say uptown, they usually mean 110th Street and north on the west side of Manhattan. Times Square area is considered mid-town. Yet Manhattan is also distinguished between West Side and East Side. Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) or Madison Avenue is usually the split depending on what part of Manhattan you are in, since Madsion Avenue ends at 23rd Street.

It is generally a reference to the more affluent end of town. Where the more expensive Real Estate is, where the expensive shops are, where the rich people live. Think of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl".

properly, in case you % to take the attitude that all and sundry is a sinner and consequently a undesirable guy, deserving punishment, I advise you sign in for accountability with the Mutaween, the Saudi religious police. in case you spot somebody doing something un-Islamic (and consequently sinful), you could beat the residing sh*t out of them. ingesting alcohol, listening to Western music, and socialising with women people different than different halves and kin are all valid grounds for a spiritual kicking. "perchance the main intense and extensively criticized incident attributed to them got here approximately on March 11, 2002, while they prevented schoolgirls from escaping a burning college in Mecca, because of the fact the girls weren't wearing headscarves and abayas (black robes), and not accompanied by skill of a male guardian. Fifteen females died and 50 have been injured as a consequence"
