We all hv read or knew the sad tragic story of the man who died @MRT station cos of financial problems. After the story was published in New Paper, many kind singaporeans showed alot of sympathy ,care and generousity to help the family out.
But a few days later, it became the'talk of the town' as alot of "kay pohs"(busybodies) wanted to know how the widow going to manage the huge amount of money donated the public donated to the family.
Worst of all, some actually went up to house to ask for 4d numbers. These ppl hv no sense of sympathy for others and it totally showed their UGLY ,GREEDY side of them. All donations should be UNCONDITIONAL.Yet some ah Soh(aunties)approached the family to ask for 4d number! This is really SHOCKING and totally INSANE!!! Doesn't she has a conscience and what she did was a shameful, inhuman act ? Can't these 'greedy',unsympathic ah sohs/ah peks(aunties/uncles) leave the family alone and let them re adjust their lives ?

Well this is the bahaviour of most Singaporeans. They always feel that when they donate something out, there should be some return. They can't donate things without any string attached to it. Personally I feel that if you are willing to donate the money to help them, you shouldn't go and asked them for 4D and asked them how they are going to spend the money. If people start to do this in our society, we are not going to have a gracious society.

It's merely apathy coupled with a somewhat skewed version of pragmatism. Some people just lack the ability to symphatise with the plight of others, and choose to pursue what that can gain out of the situation instead: a 4d number. This is not unlike the phenomenon of taking down the number of a car that has been in accident. Schoking, insane, shameful, inhuman? I don't think so. Insensitive and unsymphatetic? Most probably.

Let's not generalise to make such a quick conclusions to all Singaporeans. There would be such ugly people in all societies anyway, not just in Singapore. (I refrain from naming my experiences with all the ugly people in some other countries.)

Let's take consolation that such people have to exist in order to contrast how better civilised the rest of us are.

Don't forget that media also played up and glorified the stories. That's life.

Do you know Singaporeans are very jealous type of peoples. Because they, themselves not dare to do anythings(Kiasu) and when one of their fellow citizen does it with flying colours then the rest of them make noises. (jealous and sour grapes) Is very common, can see in our daily newspaper. No choice! this society is like that, got to live with it.
