I have not heard of a drug or magic bullet that works. These things work in combination with other methods.

The drug Alprazolam has a calming effect when things get out of control. You don't have to take it every day like some other anxiety drugs and you don't want to neither, because it can be habit forming, so it is for the occasional attacks or stressful uncertain times.

But before getting to a stage where you can take occasional meds, you have to take control of this demon in your head. Along with therapy, self-help is great and this is where you will get the biggest benefit. Midwest Center or something similar can be a great tool to help you retrain you brain and lift your spirits.

Some professional therapy can help you work through the causes of anxiety.

And often overlooked… exercise. Something active to get the blood going and sweat of stress hormones.

Don't forget Jesus or your lord of choice. :) Cry out to the universe, you'll get an answer.

The trouble with Medication is that it only masks the actual problem. Since you have tried for so long don't you think it is about time to try Cognitive Behavioural Therapy? Unless you have already done so in which case you should look at Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. No phobia just springs into being, there are reasons why you feel like this and if you can work them out you can control them. You need help but the right sort of help. Try it, what have you got to lose and by the way , incredibly well done to stay off Meds for 8 months, takes real courage that. Good Luck!

The MAOI drug Nardil has been found to be effective in treating social phobia-one website says it can be 2-3x as effective as Effexor and other SSRIs/SNRIs for social phobia.

MAOIs should not be taken unless you are ready to make the lifestyle changes required for the drug-major dietary changes as well as avoiding certain medications like Adrenaline (used by the dentist or doctor when freezing a site), dextramethorphan (the DM in cough syrups) and Demerol, to name a few.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can also be helpful in changing some of the thought patterns in social phobia-the fear of being embarrassed, fear of being introduced, etc.

I'm in a similar situation.I've tried pretty much everything, but the best the medications do is relieve the very worst of the symptoms...nothing has made any difference in the long term. The drugs which are currently used for the newly created 'social anxiety disorder' have gained their license by fairly dubious means-there only needs to be some effect on symptoms for these medications to be proven to be 'effective'...it's a farce...sorry-this one really p**ses me off.All I can offer is my sympathy.

Have you tried Lyrica? It is the best thing for anxiety that I've ever taken. I recommend you ask your doctor about this drug. Even though it has not formerly been recommended for anxiety, many tests have proven that it has a wide range of uses. Do a search. Type 'Lyrica' into Yahoo Search and read about it. Good luck.
