What do you call your grandparents? I have always called mine mammaw and pappaw. My fiance calls his grandma and grandpa. Our girls calls everyone but their father' s stepmom mammaw or pappaw; they call their pappaw's wife nana. I kind of wish my girls could call their grandma's mammaw and grandpa's pappaw.

This is the result of some of the elder persons' attempts to inject the distinction between a step mother and a natural mother into the kids' mind. Correct the children. Every grand parent deserves respect and should be introduced to the children in their first encounters.Wrong language will put the affected elders in a tricky situation in dealing with the child. But the blame for the mess will squarely be on the mother who is the custodian of moral standards for the infants. By the way Nanna is not indicative of step mother status.
Do correct the kids.

My kids call my in-laws, Memaw and Papa. My youngest also refers to my MIL as, Nemo (like the fish), it's her version of Memaw. While, my parents were still alive, my daughter called them, Gramma and Grampa. My mom insisted that she not call her by the Japanese word, Bachan (grandma); since, Bachan was what my sister and I called our grandmother (my mom's MIL).
