The incidence of Lyme disease in ticks varies with geographical location....it just depends upon where you are in the country. If you do a quick Internet search, you can find a map that shows the areas of occurance.

Ticks carry other diseases you should be worried about, however. Where I practice, we see a lot of canine erlichiosis. Ticks can also cause anemia, a specific problem called tick paralysis, and even Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in dogs. They can also transmit other, less common, diseases.

If your dog has ticks, please call your veterinarian and ask first about Frontline, Advantix, or a Preventic collar to get rid of them on your dog. Do NOT pull the ticks off (and that has nothing to do with leaving the heads behind, which is not an issue.)

Screening for Lyme disease and erlichiosis is included in the routine annual heartworm test used by most veterinarians....but you need to ask to make sure it's included. There are some older DVMs out there who still use only the plain heartworm test.

Lyme disease is only common in deer ticks. Is your dog on Frontline? If it is, your dog will be ok. When a tick bites your dog the tick dies. The head of the tick becomes embedded into the skin and becomes a bump. This bump will scar and heal on it's own in time. If you animal isn't on Frontline. Your dog cannot be tested for lymes disease until a week after the bite. Good luck!

It also depends on how plentiful the deer population is in your area because it is caused by a bite from an infected deer tick. I double checked and yes dogs can get it but it cannot be passed from dog to dog...if your dog starts getting listless and has symptoms of the flu then take it to the vet asap!

How common it is depends on your location. Usually, your local vet has a pretty good idea of how much he/she has had to deal with it. That would be a good place to start.
