I would cut the cake in a triangle then square of the two top corners to make it look like the logo, frost the whole thing in deep blue, use a butter knife to repeat the shape in 2 inches in, frost with yellow, use red frosting in a bag with the narrow tip to frame yellow area, switch to 1" tip to draw S (you could pre draw this with a toothpick to have a form to follow), finally outline s and red frame with a fine tip black gel icing and there you have it.
You could also see if a local bakery will print it on rice paper for you or if your son was superman for Halloween use that image on an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. Good Luck!

Good for you! Your son will treasure a cake made by mom (trust me, I know). Anyone can buy a bakery cake, but this will be something special.

I've done cakes for years and - yes - there's an easy way to stencil a cake. First off - use merangue powder in your icing (look up a recipe for buttercream icing with merangue powder). This is what the "professionals" use and the powder allows your icing to "crust over" so you can lightly touch it without messing it up. While you're buying the merangue powder, buy a small tube of colored piping gel. After you've iced your cake, allow it to "dry" for 10 minutes. If you have a picture of an "S" logo - great - if not, you should be able to find one online. Print it out on thin paper. Flip the paper over and trace it on the back. Outline this newly traced (and backwards) design with the piping gel. Now, lay your gelled design gently on top of your cake and then remove. You'll have a perfect outline of your "S" to fill in with more icing. I've used this technique TONS of times to copy comic book figures and even a child's own personal artwork. Works like a charm. If you have any more questions, write me at my regular e-mail at wichitaredhead@cox.net. Good luck! Gina

probably the easiest way to do it is to lay the "base" coat down first. this could be whatever color like blue or white or yellow or whatever. have a pic of the logo handy and plot the points or the corners with whatever color frosting you're using. since the logo is fairly geometric and not too zig zagggy in nature, once you plot the corners or intersections, then just fill in with the remaining colors. basically just do it by eye and line it up. otherwise, pay the local baker to do it for you.

I lay my pic on the cake and out line with a toothpick then I use a small star tip to do each color I normally outline in black. hope this helps.
