As an older woman I get very weak from dieting. Any recommendations? To lose weight I have to go below 900 calories a day and then I start becoming very weak.

Try to eat more calories broken up into small frequent meals, try to eat every three hours to keep your blood sugar level and your metabolism revved. And tons of water!!

900 calories really isn't enough to stay healthy -- to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in, and if you only lose weight if you go below 900, that probably means you aren't active enough. Start out slow and take short walk. Park far from the entrance of work or the store. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Work in the yard. Or, find a short exercise video that fits your physical level and do that a few times a week.

You need a consulation with a dietician. You should not be getting weak from dieting. There is much more to it than simply reducing calories to the 900 per day level. What is important is what constitutes those calories. You could score 900 calories a day with 3 chocolate bars. But if you are eating oatmeal or an egg for breakfast, a reasonable lunch, with poached or steamed fish, lots of veggies for dinner and drinking lots of water, you should not be getting weak.

If you're going below 900 calories you must be doing a "balanced" diet like Weight Watchers. Those diets are ineffective, slow and the high carb levels wreak havoc with blood sugar and that's probably why you're tired.

As a precaution you might think about getting a check up and ask your doctor to run basic blood tests. Tiredness can come from many conditions.

I have no clue why anyone would need to go below 900 to lose weight. However, I am not your doctor (your doctor told you this, right?)

I'd advise bumping up your physical activity levels so that you burn more calories. You might gain muscle mass, but you'll burn fat and we're after FAT REDUCTION, not weight reduction in most cases, right?

I'd still get a second opinion on that 900 number....

don't go slow that you are week. Look into exercise videos for adults and look into prevention magazine, a health magazine for older women which is also online. Or else see women's health magazine, which is online as well. Healthy eating and exercise is the best way to go.

Exercise!!!!!!!!
Don't "fitness walk" that does nothing.
Jog or run if you can.
Good Luck.
