No matter what, make sure you are happy.

It's his problem after that.

That sounds heartless, but in reality how can you make someone happy if you're not happy yourself. Be straightforward with him. It will be better for him in the end, but it will hurt.

This is tough. Be firm and tell him that you don't feel that way about him anymore, that you are sorry that he is hurt, but he needs to let you go. You will have to do this more than once. Always stand your ground. Do not get emotional or give him the slightest bit of pity or you will be dealing with endless blubbering. If he calls, tell him to stop calling you that the realionship is over. Good luck. If you do this he will get the message and leave you alone, if you don't you can create a stalker.

My first girlfriend broke up with me during the summer after high school. I'd always wanted a girlfriend and after having one couldn't imagine life without her. I wanted to stay with her the rest of my life and never risk being alone again. She broke up with me in the street in front of my house one evening. Somehow we made it back to my garage where I continued to scream, cry, and bawl for more than an hour, begging her not to do it, begging her to explain why. At one point my mom came out to see what was the matter and then left. I've only recently come to terms with the break up, yes, 15 years later, and forgiven her, myself, and realized that there is nothing she can tell me about me, so no point in continuing to search for her and get her to explain, whatever reason she had for breaking up with me was her reason and has nothing to do with who I am.

I think it would've been easier to handle if she'd written me a detailed note, left it with my mother and explained to my mother that she was breaking up with me, and left me to deal with it alone, just that my mother would know so if I tried to do anything stupid she'd be watching, not that she'd hold my hand or anything.

If you've told him you love him, there's not much you can say in the letter that's not going to make him blame you as a liar, and he's going to want to tell you you're a liar, and he'll probably turn from sad to pissed off right away.

Make sure you tell him not to call or write to you, because you're done and you don't want to have further contact. Relationship over.

Don't worry if your boyfriend is emotional because if your relationship goes on he'll be more hurt if you tell him that ever since that day you wanted to break up with him. Make it easier for him to forget you when you break up because he'll take it as an insult if you take so long to tell him your true feelings in him. Goodluck!

The kindest way to break up with him is to do it as soon as possible and make it a clean break with no further contact or he'll be weeping on the phone every night.

It's nice to want to spare his emotions, but you have to tell him the truth. Dragging it out will only cause both of you more pain and anxiety.
