They are all expensive but you can find the name of a local cab company and ask them how much It'll cost from Penn to your destination. You can also look at the MTA map to see if its better just to take the subway.

Our trip to NYC was smooth. We used the subway and buses and used a cab to go clubbing. Cab charged us $20 one way.
You can buy daily or weekly passes. They allow you to get on both subways and buses with no limits. We bought a weekly pass for $25 but I believe that day passes are $7. good luck and have fun.

It all depends on where you're heading. The subways are great, just make sure you get an all day Metrocard, they are also good for the NYC bus system. If you must go it by cab, remember that traffic can be horrific during rush hour. Sometimes, you can be stuck at one intersection for a long time, and that meter keeps running up the tab.

Cabs are pretty expensive, but the cost depends on destination, time of travel, and especially traffic conditions. The subway is the best way to get around the city except perhaps late at night.
The site gives you basic rate of a taxi fare.

It usually costs me about $9-10 (including tip) to go about 3 miles from the East Village, over the Williamsburg Bridge to Williamsburg, Brooklyn at NIGHT (no traffic). Just an example of a typical ride.
Also, if the driver gets lost and you can't direct him, you will be charged the entire time. You can get out and refuse to pay but there will be a shouting match.
A private car service will usually try to charge me $14-25 for the same ride.

Where I live, the cab starts out (Canadian), at $2.55, and its 5 cents every 3 seconds. I thought that was pricey enough. Cabs suck! Take the subway. Thats why I walk :)
