Obviously, running or jogging is a cardiovascular, aerobic workout. However, do they still stimulate muscle mass or tone? And if so, what muscles benefit the most from running/jogging?

Thanks.

Specifically, I'm curious if your abdominal muscles get stronger or become more toned with running. Thanks.

Your quad, gluts and calfs, ham stringsYou did not have the last part oif the question on there when I answered. No running will do nothing for your abs except that the cardio workout you get will reduce fat all over including the abs, but it wont help with toning them.

The muscles used most in running are the butt muscles and the calf & hamstring muscles which run along the back of the legs. Running will not stimulate muscle mass but will contribute to toning as well as to loss of body fat which will make the muscles more noticable.

Any runner should do some gym work on the front of his legs, the shin muscles and the quads to avoid muscle imbalance injury.

NOPE. Running will do nothing for your abs, except as relates to loss of body fat. So with lots of ab work and running, you could get some good cuts.

Running works the backs of your legs the most, so your calves and hamstrings benefit the most.
Running also helps tone you abs and sometimes even your arms.

To target other muscle groups, lifting , swimming, biking, or other cross-training activities can be implemented into your routine.

If you like to run, track running builds a very good core as long as a strong lower body. But the basics like crunches will help ypu acheive your goal.
