First things first, you should never buy a dog as a gift. Even if your BF says over and over that he wants a mastiff, one should never be purchased as any kind of gift. And NO reputable breeder would sell you one as a gift. Which means that you are left with pet stores, newspaper ads, internet ads, and other unethical breeders who breed poor stock dogs and do so only for money.
Second thing is, dogs are expensive. Shopping for a dog is no time to be cheap. An ethical, responsible breeder that breeds show dogs is going to have puppies that are probably less expensive than a pet shop or an unethical breeder. And while the dog may be a pet quality puppy, it will probably have less issues than one of the above.
And with a mastiff - does your boyfriend have room for one? They erquire lots of space, but need to live inside. They can easily eat 70 pounds of food a month - can he afford that? They also are very very large - is that an issue?
I'm going to link a few information sites for you. It's vital that you read them before getting a dog for you or for anyone. Good luck to you.

Ditto what Acceptance and Mustanglynnie said. There's a reason why some pups are pricey--good breeders have the parents screened for health problems and take excellent care of the mom and pups which costs money.
Another $$$$ issue---mastiffs cost a lot to take care of. The meds that cost $20 for a cocker spaniel will cost a few times that because of their size.
Everything and anything he'll do with this dog will cost more and need to be bigger. If he gets a new car, he'll need to have room.
Mastiffs eat more, poop more and drool more than many other breeds.
Raising a puppy that will very quickly weigh more than many adult people is a big responsibility. Training and socializing this breed so it can be the gentle giant it is supposed to be requires an owner who will spend a great deal of time with it.
If he truly wants one and he is familiar with the breed (perhaps he grew up with one?) let him decide and choose a breeder. You may have to wait for pups, but it will be worth it.
Please don't surprise him with a puppy. It could be a costly mistake for you, him and the pup.

Be very careful looking for a 'cheap' one - this breed would best be purchased from a reputable breeder that OFA certifies the hips & elbows against dysplasia. 'Cheap' pups now would likely cost you more than three times as much as a well-bred one down the road in surgery expenses to help alleviate these problems.
Go to www.akc.org & buy from a breeder that is a member of the closest breed club's chapter that does certify their breeding dogs for a healthy, well adjusted pet you can enjoy for years. Or go to the breed's rescue group on the same website and give a 2nd chance to a dog that needs a new home - the fees to adopt one of these are minimal, and they often have young dogs past the housetraining stage. Good luck!

Well, then you are lloking for a backyard breeder that does not screen for health problems and could care less about anything but the money.
It is a PRICY breed if bred correctly!!!!!!!!! Beware!!! They can be VERY unhealthy too!!

i does no longer. Giving canine human drugs is very risky. canine and human beings are very distinctive from one yet another. And if I have been you, i'd unquestionably shop an eye fixed on him, some canine are allergic to stings and the region can replace into extreme. i'd in basic terms depart him on my own. If he's in a great number of soreness, call your vet and ask them what to do.

Check out www.petfinder.com to see what they have. Also, most specific breeds have rescue sites, so use Dogpile (or Google) to check for mastiff rescue organizations.
