I have to ask, cause I see this a lot here. Ted Haggard - Super-Christian, until the scandal, now not a "true christian". BTK killer - deacon of his church, then convicted, thus, not a "true Christian." How come people who are Christians, whenever a scandal hits, or one of their own is accused of a horrible crime, say that "they weren't a true Christian?" What exactly is a True Christian? Seems to me that as soon as you do something bad (by Christian's standards) they assume your faith was just a joke. Am I wrong about this?

Okay, but no one is really getting to the heart of the matter, which is - Why is one of your own suddenly not a True Christian, even if he's been a christian his entire life? Do deeds define faith?

I think you're quite right, but I don't know why it happens over and over again. That is the $64, 000 question. I could never let myself be sucked in like that. I would think that a true Christian would follow the teachings of Christ, as the name implies. You know, tolerance, love, charity, etc., etc.

Edit: Oops!!:

Ambrose Bierce defined Christian back in the late 1800s. His definition follows:

"Christian, One who believes that the New Testament is a divinely inspired book admirably suited to the spiritual needs of his neighbor. One who follows the teachings of Christ in so far as they are not inconsistent with a life of sin."

The only Christian that ever walked this earth was Christ. Any person who has the spirit of Christ will talk the same talk, walk the same walk and do the same works. I have met a few and they walk a separate path far from the historic church names, far from the franchise and media congregations, far from those who claim they are gathered with the "right" and have need of nothing that anyone can show them.

To know if a person is a Christian requires spiritual discernment; but the fruits or outcomes finally tell the tale for one and all. Those you see as making an excuse are telling the truth, despite their motives. As for works, seek them out if you can find them?

From the smallest to the greatest, God has already spit the so-called Christian churches and religious endeavors of this age out of His mouth. Why be concerned with the actions of one man here and another there, when God has rejected them all.

The day is upon us when everybody will be forced to fly his or her true colors. The big question is what colors each of us will fly?

A true Christian is defined by the fruits of the spirit which are love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, humility, patience; while lacking envy, pride and malice as described in I Corinthians Chapter 13.

The true Christian rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth and behaves in a chaste manner thinking no evil. The Christian who is real will bear all things, believe all things, hope all things and endure all things.

It should be added that a true Chrisitian will be separated from the world which includes every brand name world religion and including the more than 300 religious perversions of Christianity in existance today.

More than likely he was not a true Christian. Some people think a Christian is a saint and he will not sin anymore. This would be impossible because of our human character. A Christian will still sin after he decides to become a Christian but his goal is to improve his life.
Being a member of a Christian church or religion does not automatically make a person a Christian. I have always said some of the worst people are church members.

There are Children of GOD (Spirts Recreated--Born-Again--Saved) and if they Continue DILIGENTLY to Follow Jesus's Teachings in the Bible, They will Eventually become what is Called a "CHRISTIAN".
Now, all Saved People are Christians in their Spirits--they got Recreated and their Christ-Like in their Spiritman.
BUT not all Children of GOD are "CHRISTIAN" as the World sees them.
Jesus was "THE CHRISTIAN".
We are trying to be Like HIM.
CHRIST-LIKE.
It comes by Learning to Walk in Holiness.
If you make it to that Level, you will ACT, THINK and TALK like Jesus, Signs and Wonders will Follow you and Miracles too.
Now, how many Children of GOD that you have seen, even though they are on their Way to Heaven---are CHRISTIANS?
Am I a CHRISTIAN (Christ-Like) at This Time. No.
In the Past I Walked in Holiness for a While, then got Demoted.
It is Hard to Stay up Their.
Your on the Front Line of the Enemys Attacks!
Hard.
I can go Back up Though, just the Other Day GOD told me to Quit Playing Around.
HE needs me back up there to Pray for the Lost.

Spiritual Warfare.
Holiness---
When you get Ready to Fight for Others--don't Go to War With-Out it.

Samson, David, Peter, and the list goes on of Christians who fell into sin. They are still Christians. Even Adam fell from a state of purity before the curse. However this is no excuse to sin but rather a warning of how deceitful and powerful sin is.
As to Pastors they are to be held to a higher standard so if they fall into sin like this they should not be Pastors.

A true Christian is a person who has God's love through them. They are not judging because they know that judging is done by God and no one else... for us to judge is us saying we are equal to God.

It would also be a compassionate, understanding, and non-confrontational person that try attracting people to the light instead of deterring with opinions and preaching.

An unbiast Christian would love and appriciate another person regardless of sexual preference, other religions... pretty much anything that would cause a confilct because they know that being rude won't want to make anyone go to church with you! lol

A true Christian is hard to find!

interesting question. the best way to answer this is to say he or she could be Joe six pack a person you pass on the street with out even noticing them. he or she works to provide a living for their family the do their good deeds in secret so as not to embarasse those that they help. the don't make a spectacle of themselves, don't lead but follow the majority when in a crowd. they will share their believes but will not make one feel like their space is being invaded. the look for the good in everything , and don't speak bad of their fellow man, or non believer's. they spend quality time with their children and teach them to do the same with others. they look after the sick , feed the homeless belong to no political group because they have voted for god and gods kingdom. and that's just the start

Someone who lives their lives in accordance with Christian Values and beliefs. The deceased Reverend TED Noffs (Sydney), once said," to be a Christian does not mean you have to attend church"
Trouble is there are too many hypocrites.

Christian means CHRISTIsAlwaysNear. Regardless of the situation, everyone falls in order for God to let everyone know, he is still in control. A "True Christian" lives to the best of their ability according to Gods word and commandments. However we are all human and God is God. And in being human (no pun intended) God is trying to get our attention but man still has his blinders on, and still refuses to acknowledge him. So therefore he will use people of power (because he knows of their strength and ability to handle it, through loving him) Just ask Job--same thing happened to him. He lost everything, but by not cursing God afterward and praising him... God blessed him ten times over.
Again--It's mans transgression upon >himself< as to why "Bad things happen to good people". For example: I tried walking on water, but I learned how to swim real fast. I'm not perfect, and neither are those mentioned above.
