They aren't related because they are on opposite sides of the family.

Think of it this way:
When you get married, your spouse's brother becomes your brother - and your children's uncle - but he doesn't become your sister's brother or yous sister's kid's uncle.

So, the Aunt has joined the Great Uncles family - but her neice didn't. At the same time - the Great Uncle joined the Aunt's family, but his great nephew didn't.

The friends aren't related at all. The one got a new uncle and the other got a new great aunt. But the friends got jack.

They aren't related at all. At best they are step cousins. That's not a blood relation so to me it means they are related.
