Ask yourself what you love the most and I guarantee you'll find it here.
Music? You'll find live jazz, opera, rock, rap, classical, and more.
History? Visit sites from the Dutch to the American Revolution to WWII to the homes of famous Americans like the Vanderbilts, Rockefeller, and more.
Art? Culture? We've got some of the world's best art museums, modern art, furniture collections, clothing collections, the world's best natural history museum, ballet, modern dance, and more.
Sports? Besides the obvious Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Jets, Giants, and Rangers, there are plenty of places to get outdoor yourself whether hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking, sailing, skating, and more.
How about food? You'll find every single kind of cuisine you can imagine, and like some other people mentioned, get it hot and made to order at 3am - name it we've got it, from the best hot dogs to some of the finest restaurants in the world.
Shopping? You'll find everything from discount department stores with name brand merchandise at deep discounts to some of the finest and most expensive stores in the world.
And all of that pulsing with an energy and a creative force that's unlike any other place on earth. Basically, if you can't find it in New York, it doesn't exist. Does that sound overrated to you?

Go there with an open mind and willing to experience something different. There is no other place like New York, for better or worse, its up to you to make the best of it. If you go up there expecting to be disappointed, you will be. Go up there willing to find something great, and then you will have a great visit.
I have been there three times and i love the city, each trip was different as if I had been to three different cities.
Do the touristy things, but take some time to explore off the tourist map. Ask New Yorkers for tips, they know the ins and outs, and despite what you may have heard, they are extremely helpful.
I feel sorry for the person who after leaving the city, feels it was overrated. They don't know how to enjoy life.

Experiences are what you make them, what you get out of them. Both times I went to Europe I heard how no one there likes Americans and I would have a hard time; but I went with an open mind and had a great time both times.
I live less then an hour from the city and I haven't had a bad time yet. If you want some cool things to do you can hit up a Broadway show, but try to stay away from ones with big name starts that aren't known for singing and dancing. I heard Les Mis was great from a friend of mine who just went on Friday night. There is a club called The Culture Club and Nerve-ana, one up stairs one down stairs, they are and 80's and 90's club. That was a blast. I hit up The Culture Club a month ago for my bachelorette party. You can take a day trip on the train out to the Hampton's or Montauk Point. A long ride but well worth it. So there is a lot of great stuff to do, you just have to have an open mind and not concern yourself with how much money you are spending. NY is a great city. Enjoy yourself.
**************
You should also hit up the Museum of Natural History and the Bronx Zoo, if it's not too cold.

Just about everything in NYC is world class: the Bronx Zoo, the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art), the Museum of Natural History, the Met (Metroplitan Opera Hose), Broadway, Lincoln Center, the Empire State Building, and that barely scratches the suface. You don't really have to plan your days, because you can pretty do what you want when you want.
Be aware, it is crowded. There's 8 million people crammed into about 300 sq mi (500 sq km). The subway will take you anywhere you want to go, so don't even consider driving. What you do depends mostly on your own interests.

It really is an awesome city. It is also a very friendly city (believe it or not). You can get really good deals in the city too from food to just about anything that someone is selling on the street.(Legal things, I mean). Hotels as in any big city are very expensive though. If you've never been there before, I think you'll love it. There are soooooo many cool neighborhoods and places to go/see. My daughter has been there a few times on HS trips and LOVES it. She is now considering some colleges in or near the city. HAVE FUN!!!!!

Nothing compares to NYC, whenever I travel to another city, I can't help being disappointed. If you are truly limited for cash however, no city will ever live up to your expectations. I know some tourists are overwhelmed by the masses of people and cars in mid-town, or they are too closed minded for the Village. Just come and visit our city without any preconceived ideas, New York means something different to each person. It is an adventure worth having, enjoy!

New York and LA both are just...overwhelming. It's easy to think they're overrated because usually when you visit you just see a small part, and it takes weeks to see these cities properly. To really appreciate how all the different neighborhoods come together, you need to spend time in several of them.

Yes it is. New York is okay but Chicago is better. Better pizza and skyline and the people are more down to earth. I haven't visited NY in over 20 years and I missed everything that it used to be: the slums, the garbage, the gangs, the grafitti, the mugging, the bums, and most of all the Twin Towers. Black kids playing the boomboxes real loud and spinning on their heads. People staring right in your face as you walk by. That was the REAL New York. Today it's too mellowed down and too corporate looking and too squeaky clean.

no, it isn't if you live there, but it is overrated as a vacation spot. My mom went to college in new york and she will always be a new yorker, so throughout my entire childhood there were many trips to the City. If you are going to New York as a tourist, sure, there are things to do, but you don't really experience New York unless you've lived there or you are going with someone who has lived there.

one of the MUST places to visit in the world.
one can not live today without having been in the 'city'.
Bring VERY comfy shoes you will be walking a LOT.
Bring a nap sack so your hands are free and you can live out of your nap sack. ( water, sandwiches, snacks )
take the cheapest way to travel 'TO' the NYC.
it's the whole travel experience you will love and it will earn you bragging rights.
Come and see the city.
Read as much as you can before you come, but come.
You will love it.
After a few months, when you are back at home you will have forgotten how much you have spend.
but you will always remember your NYC experience.
