I would like to make a correction.
It can be misleading to say, "Allah is everywhere." If you make this statement, then how do you explain where Allah was before He created Space (the "where")?
It is more accurate to say, "Allah is not in a place," because the One who is far Exalted above His creation is not subject to His creation (including Time and Space).
Please know also that the Holy Prophet's seeing of Allah has nothing to do with eyesight or physical properties. The only way to see Allah is to realize His greatness in the heart (to "see" Him with the heart).
(Holy Quran 6:103)

Allah is everywhere, but some people (not pointing any fingers here, nostalgia) keep on thinking that God is human. I'm relatively sure that a being capable of creating the entire universe and being older than time itself is just a little bit different from any human that I've seen. We don't strike me as being a terribly wonderful and omnipotent species.
When Muslims say that God is "everywhere", it goes beyond the physical and material world in that we can sense His presence anywhere without the aid of holy men or places. He is always awarer of everything that has been, is, and will be. Do you want "everywhere" more than that?
But if one, such as Muhammad, would like to see God beyond the limits of this earth and such materialism, one would assume that the best place to find God would be Heaven. From which, I assume, you'd need something a bit bulkier than a "horse".
Al-Buraq took him from Mecca to Jurasalem, and then from there acended to the heavens. So yeah, the place is a little bit important to us.

The bulk of the above comes originally from the Hebrew scriptures and is based on the law of Moses, which Islam has named Sharia, so Islam is really not much different than classic Judaism. The non-conforming text is based on localized, tribal customs. Since Christianity constitutes the authentic fulfillment of all the prophecies of the Old Testament, in the person of Jesus Christ, there was never any need for Mohamed ... and Islam, as a religion, was already obsolete ... hundreds of years before it was ever invented. That said, Catholics believe that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Allah of Islam, and the ONE, triune God of Christianity are the same. This can easily be proved mathematically by the following equation: 1 X 1 X 1 = 1.

Allah is everywhere: means He can see and hear all creature (not humans only). He can see you at the bottom of the sea, on the moon, in a cave. He know what's in your heart.
Allah wanted to show Mohammed ((pbuh) heaven and hell so that he can tell Muslims who they R like. This way we will choose to stay on the path of righteousness or sin. Since Mohammed never lies, Muslims believed him. The door of hell was opened and he saw how sinners are tortured. He saw how heaven is like….The journey had a purpose.
If u don't believe this, fine.
Peace.

I hope this question is not about present ownership/claims to Jerusalem?
Muhammad did not travel to go to where Allah was and/or to see Allah, but so that He will make him to experience some mysteries.
