There are a number of stages in taking out a patent to protect your invention. The last stage involves checking through all existing patents to make sure that your patent does not infringe any patents previously granted. During this period (which can take quite a long time) you can make and sell your invention which you mark with the words "patent pending" to show would be copiers that a full patent is being processed and that your invention has some form of protection.

Patent pending mean`s the time that it take`s before the patent office will grant you the right`s to what you have invented. so that you can prove that you are the one that invented first and to keep other`s from making money from your invention. After the patent has been granted to you.
