I had two cats (brothers) for the last two years. About four months ago, the one cat began peeing all over the place (which I caught him - the other religiously uses the box) and ruined stuff in my home (much of which had to be tossed out). I just got rid of him today, and yes I feel very terrible but had no choice. I am due to have a baby in a month and he has left me a stressed out mess due to his constant peeing problem. I had him to the vet, treated for UTI, he was on a special diet, the whole nine yards, but just wouldn't give it up. I cleaned his boxes twice a day, bought fresh litter, and did everything I could except take him to a specialist - so don't say I didn't try to help him please!!! However I am now worried about the other cat. Will he be sad when he realizes his brother is gone and not coming back?? What can I do to help him (which may sound dumb)??? I don't want him to quit eating and die or something like that - serious answers please!

Yes both cats were neutered and we had no issues with him till about four months ago. It is like he decided he hated us or something!

I am not selfish either, I have a baby on the way in a month and the last thing I need is a cat peeing on the baby's items - bed, bassinet, diaper bag, etc. I did everything I could to help the animal and he couldn't be reasoned with. I feel terrible I got rid of him - I have never had to do that before in my life. He already ruined the baby's playpen, my futon, a chair, and I have had to wash clothes and every rug in my home since he just wouldn't quit. I even found a pair of shoes in my closet he peed on. How much would you have put up with??? I have had many animals and NONE of them has ever acted this way!!!

you are selfish
And people like you should not even be having
Kids!
Why not
Adopt?
oops
you are too selfish to do that
giving birth to your own 10 lbs baby is the most selfish thing you can do

There is a good chance there will be some separation anxiety for the cat that you kept because he is used to his brother being there and having a companion. Best thing to do is reassure him, give him a lot of love and attention to let him know you won't be getting rid of him as well. It will pass just give him time. Was your other cat neutered? Neutered males are less likely to go around urinating on things but if he was, it was probably something of a habit. Just curious. :)

Most likely the peeing cat was stressed by the changes going on in your house due to the impending arrival of the baby.
I imagine that the remaining cat will be sad for a while but most get over it. I had a cat that was sad when we had to get rid of a nightmare of a dog who refused to be house trained. After a couple of months he was fine and he never quit eating or anything like that.

for the allergy you can get a product called "Petal Cleanse" it's rubbed onto the cat's coat and ruduces allergens, many who thought the cat would need rehomed did not after using this product. it s safe and recomended by the UK CPL.... as for the pee'ing you need to get a cleaner that removes the scent so the cats do not smell it or they will keep going back, the vet or pet store should have something suitable...bleach is no good as the cat is attracted back.........you can get drops to go in the litter that will attract the cat to the tray, put a few drops in and take kittie to the tray. or maybe try confining them to a small area until they are using only the tray.. as you say you've had the cats at the vet and no problem was found.......

You are projecting into the future of what he might do...find out what he will do and go from there...I applaud your efforts with the other cat and as far as I can see you did everything you could do but for some reason he would not cooperate which is sad.
I think you need to concentrate on you and the upcoming birth of your baby first...I know you care a lot about your cat and he will be lost for awhile but he will need time to adjust.
You could eventually get another cat to keep him company possibly a spayed female. Congrats on the baby!

The other cat will be very sad because he probably likes playing with the one you're getting rid of. He will really miss the other cat if it's his brother!

Cats are independent creatures that prefer solidarity. The chances of him becoming anorexic and dying are low. He will make adjusments, but overall he will be happier to have his own litter box, own food and water bowls and his own loving from you all to himself! If you start stressing over losing his brother than the cat you have now will see those feelings and then become upset. Otherwise, you don't need to worry about helping him out, he'll be just fine!!!

This doesn't sound dumb at all.
Yes, he will notice that his brother is gone and will no doubt be forlorn and looking for him. You can console him by buying him some new toys - perhaps even a carpeted cat climbing tower - and spend extra time with him.
And I know this may sound dumb, but talk to him. Explain to him what is going on, how you feel and tell him that you are there for him and you will take care of him. I believe that even if animals don't undertsnad all our vocabulary, they do understand tone of voice, emotional connection and sincerity. He will respond favorably I am sure.
Good luck!

First, as a mom-to-be you should not be messing with the litter box. [That's a grandmom talking.;-) ]
Your male cat was probably "marking" his territory since there was another male cat in the house. I doubt the one behind is going to become depressed. If nothing else, he is going to enjoy the extra attention you give him.
A friend who had 2 cats lost one to breast cancer. The one left behind now acts like she is the queen and enjoys all the attention.
You did what you needed to do. Rest your mind and get ready for the baby. Congratulations!
One more thing. . .I had 2 cats when my children were babies. I NEVER had a problem with finding the cats in the bassinet or crib.

when your cat realises his brother is gone, he'll most likely try looking for him, and when he can't find him, there'll probably be separation anxiety for a while. something like this happened to my dogs - one died and the other one got really lonely - but try playing with your cat more. if you want, you could probably get another cat for him to be friends with, not too soon though. good luck.

ok the first thing u have to remember is keep the cat away from the baby, some people say it is a myth but why take a chance on the cat suffocating the baby looking for milk. secondly , if the cat is depressed i am sure u will know by a change in behavior and then u can do 1 of 2 things, find him a new home or get him a companion. good luck
