My dog is itching and getting sores from doing so and rubbing her hair off. I don't think it is mainge because we found fleas and are treating her for that. However she does have an odor about her. Could she just be alleric to fleas. Help her please.

She may be developing a bacterial infection thaat could be serious. A vet would probably examine a skin scraping microscopically and then if appropriate prescribe oral antibiotics and a medicated shampoo. If this is not too extensive and your concern is not too high yet, you could try an iodine shampoo and rinse as well as give her some Fish Oil capsules. The odor is not typical of allergic reaction alone but if a secondary infection sets in, that could stink. Do something soon. She could become really ill.

It really helps if you don't put a dog question in the human skin section, ya know?

If you have fleas (rather, if your dog has fleas) then the problem is almost certainly a flea allergy. Like humans who get mosquito bites, dogs get all itchy and bumpy when they get bitten by fleas. Unlike human mosquito bites, it can take 6-8 weeks for the sores to heal and the itching to go away.

The "odor" is a common problem with a flea reaction.

You'll address both the odor and some of the itching with a bath. First you kill the fleas w/ a good flea shampoo, then get a good skin shampoo (oatmeal-based?) to soothe the skin.

Obviously, you gotta get rid of the fleas!!!

Please take your dog to a vet. Some forms of Mange can be contagious to humans. The poor dog needs more than a flea treatment and the flea treatments you get in the stores are not effective.

Since I'm not a vet, the only advice I could give is call the vet, get her checked out.

If is possible that she is allegic to fleas and its good that your treating her for them. My best advice would be to take her to the vet clinic if her conditions don't get any better or even get worse after treatment. I'll keep her in my prayers, please keep me posted.

hi,
well my dog had this same problem.
you may want to take her to the vet and see
if she may be allergic to anything in the house.
my two dogs lost their hair in the behind and bit
themselves raw. the problem was my carpet
powder. i stopped using it and their hair has grown
fully back and they stopped the itching.
let me know if this helps k!

She could be allergic or may have a seborrhoea problem if she smells bad.
