I don't know about "tip" but I would pay a babysitter--even if he/she was my friend. It's about two dollars an hour.
The biggest thing I would hate is coming home to a mess. If you do something make sure you pick it all up right away, that way you won't be scrambling at the end of the night trying to clean up. Hope you guys have a great night.

Lots of times, parents have to leave the kids and babysitter early in the evening and the dishes aren't done or put in the dishwasher. Cleaning the kitchen should be worthy of tip. And, yes, having the rest of the place neat and tidy should be part of the job. If the person asks the babysitter to fold the laundry or give the child a bath, I also think there should be a little reward. If there are more than 3 or more kids, I think the sitter should be paid at a higher rate than if there are only 1 or 2.

You'd have to do an exceptional job to get tipped.
If I came home and you, the babysitter, had a book where you had written down what you did with my child this evening, and what you fed her, if she was happy or had sad moments, if you did anything special with her, if she said anything worth noticing,
basically if I came home and you could tell me exactly what my child and you did all evening because it was all written down in your professional-looking notepad, then I would think that was worth a tip.
As the others say, if the house is fairly tidy when you're done, and if you got my child to do something really enjoyable like making a great picture or playing musical instruments or using alphabet flashcards instead of just watching them play.

If they went beyond the call of duty! We were away one night at a wedding and one of our daughters had been sick but seemed to be doing better by the time the sitter came. (*the sitter is our weekday nanny and was aware she was sick*) When we came home late that night, or early that morning (!) she let us know that the daughter that had been sick had been up 2x in the middle of the night, once because she was sick and once because she had wet the bed. In response to this our sitter had changed our daughters sheets 2x and had been kind enough to toss them into the washer so they weren't sitting in the laundry basket. On top of that our youngest was waking up and crying periodically that night for whatever reason so our sitter took care of her at that point as well. She truly is our lifesaver and earned herself a very nice extra tip that night!
Another time I would tip would be if we are away for a few days and come back to a house even cleaner than when we left. I usually throw in some extra money at that point as well. Being with my kids for 3+ days can be exhausting and they're great kids!

I don't tip normally, except I will "round up" to the nearest half hour or nearest $10 or whatever (i.e., I won't ask for change). Also I give a cash gift at Christmas for regular babysitters.

I'm a babysitter myself, but people like it when their kids like you. So be nice to the kids, and they will tell their parents that they like you, and the parents will hire you again and tip.

Seeing that their interactions with my children were exceptional. My children will be the best judge, and if my kids truly loved the sitter and wanted them back again, then they would be worth a tip.

A clean room where the baby was. But everything visible so I know nothing was stolen. If you clean the whole house I'll get suspicious.

Since they get paid, I would only tip them if they cleaned up and of course at Christmas and on their birthday.
