As a retired Marine with 30 years, I can say it was close but no cigar. You can never appreciate the feeling Marine Corps Boot camp can give you unless you have gone through it. When you arrive upon the hollowed grounds you can feel the presence of all the Marines that came before you. You can feel the pride that they all felt undertaking this great journey. You can feel the presence of those that served before you to keep this country safe. No Movie will ever convey those feelings, you have to live it to understand. Semper Fi. There is a reason we are the Few and the Proud. The reason is we attract the best, we attract men and women that understand it is a good thing to serve this country. Unlike John Kerry who has no respect for our troops, I do, and to my brothers and sisters serving, Thank You. God Bless and keep up the good work. Signed, MGYSGT WOODALL (Retired)

I was I boot camp at the time depicted in the movie. It was fairly close. In the movie I didn't see anyone get hit and the barracks were much nicer. We were not allowed to talk to anyone other than the DI at any time.Sneaking a round from the rifle range was virtually impossible. The degradation and the harassment was toned down a lot. It was one of the hardest experiences I've ever been through, physically or mentally. I'm sure some changes from reality had to be made so the public would accept the movie. When it was over, it appreciated what it means to be a Marine and the experience prepared me for what was to come(Vietnam). I am very proud to be a Marine(former) and I respect every Marine I meet. We are now and always will be brothers. We have a very special bond. All in all, I loved the movie.

R. Lee Ermy is a real, authentic former Senior Drill Instructer, and S/Sgt of the USMC. From the sound of his cadence, to the rapid fire, degrading, and demanding commands from his pie hole, came the utterances any former Marine can recall with a smile. The individual names of certain recruits, chosen by the DI, were truly memorable. The physical training, the barracks inspections, the individual attention given to the one (PVT Pyle) who wouldn't make it. The recruit who stood out as a leader (Modine). The verbal insults thrown out by the DI, the demand for perfection, the need for personal hygiene and pride, these were all real.
This was very close to Marine Corps boot camp, at least before the feel good liberals got a hold of it and softened it up, so that any candy @ss could say, I am a Marine.

During Vietnam, that was real close. Its toned down alittle, but still toughest boot camp the U.S. has, you also have to consider that was a draft military, to include marines back then. And for the person above me, R. Lee Eermey, the man who plays the drill sergeant, got the part for the movie because he was a Marine Corps Drill Sergeant during Vietnam, the script had to be changed to add authenticity because R. ee knew the script wasn't correct.

My husband says that Marine Corp boot camp was very similar to the movie. Now the drill sergeants have to go much easier than they used to on recruits.

now the military is too p**** and wants to baby the recruits, me and my father {who was in the army in the 1980's} could not believe how nice the seargents were, my dad said a lot " if i'd did that, i'd been pickin up my teeth}
the rangers, seals, and USMC are like that, except the seargent cannot hit the recruits

More screaming, more name calling. More physical demanding than what is shown.

The entire system has been sissified.
Drill Instructors aren't allowed to kick your a** anymore if you're a F-up.
