Okay, I am in 7th grade, and me and my BFF LOVE THE BAND T.A.T.U.! They sing in Russian, so we are trying to learn in Russian. Sometimes in school we talk to each other in Russian. It's fun! Some girls say to us, "Why are you sooo obsessed with Russian?"
Others say:
"What's with Russian?"

Okay, so we may like to learn and speak the language. It's better than being obsessed with a boy, TV show, celebrity, etc. Learning another language can really help us in our life with work, and since next year we will be applying to High Schools. High Schools, Colleges and jobs look if their people can speak other languages. Why are they so mean to us about this?

J13891: for some reason, I think this girl is in middle school!!!

I'm French and I had a boyfriend who was American (we were in our early 20s, by the way). When he was at school, he liked reading (he also liked sport, music, and taking pictures, but that's not my point). He told me that people would look at him in a weird way if he had a book in his hand during recess (is that the word for breaks?)

Anyway. Although I studied English at university, I didn't really know about that difference between France (and probably Europe) and America. In France, it's not a problem if you like reading or learning in general. If you do it all the time and don't have a social life, then people might consider you "uncool". But if you like to learn things, not necessarily things that are in your school curriculum, you can still be cool! I mean, it's not a problem!

What I mean is, in America, it seems that a lot of teens consider learning as some sort of disease! Just remember that even if you end up speaking Russian not that well, that's not the point! It proves that, if you like something, you can put your mind into it, and I think that's great. What's more, Russian is a difficult language, so my compliments for wanting to learn it!

And, yes, I personnally believe that it's better than to be obsessed with celebrities. It's a bit shallow, don't you think? I mean, the fact that you learn Russian doesn't mean that you are serious all the time. Don't worry about what they say.

Are you aware that T.A.T.U.. they're both lesbians. Russian Lesbians, to be exact. Now, I have nothing against them, but I'm surprised you didn't know that. Well, at least I don't think you know that.

Colleges looks at people who took a language through high school. Usually at least 2-3 years of the class. I don't really think schools offer Russian and colleges definitely wouldn't look at it if you haven't took a Russian class. Usually, they look at Spanish, French, German, ASL... definitely not Russian. If you're in 7th grade, then you're maybe unaware that Russia used to be the ex-Soviet Union.

A job employer wouldn't care if you spoke Russian, because do you see many people speaking Russian besides in Russia?

People are mean to you and your friend about this because they're actually really curious and they wonder why you would want to speak Russian.

Russian is cool.

I had a friend that speaks Russian and he taught me only a few words but he went back home.

I got a few things to study Russian from, CD in a public library and papers, gives me a head start, but I couldn't find some one to practice with so it got boring and I quit.

You are doing the right thing. It's fun and important.

If you pay attention, they will say stuff like "what's up with ..." about every thing that they are not interested in.

way to go

they are mean because they are insecure and they think that putting someone else down will distract everyone from how miserable they are inside.
they are probably also jealous that you aren't as superficial than they are and you are smarter and wiser (you know already the importance of learning another language). You keep speaking Russian, then move on to Mandarin and Spanish and soon you will be able to speak with half the world! good for you!!!!!!!

The girls in your grade have been led to believe that they can make babies and survive rather than help the world be a better place. Stupid people do not make the world better,so keep studying, and share with them if they will let you.

Don't pay any attention to them. What you and your bf are doing is terrific. These girls will be sitting around in hair curlers and living on welfare while you're traveling the world.

they are probably jealous because they don't know any foreign languages, or maybe they think you are talking about them since they can't understand what you say in Russian.

Is it 'better'? Who's to say what's better? Perhaps you're judging them, perhaps you're the one that's being mean. Live and let live. And quit caring what others say or do. You want freedom, then give it.
