My son, 24, still has delusions after using methamphetamine. He is on Abilify. His doc can't talk to me--privacy issues. Is this permanent? Have others recovered after so long?

Have you ever read the side effects that this medication can cause? One is neuroleptic malignant syndrome which causes fever rigid muscles, shaking confusion and some others and is fatal. and then there is tardive dyskinesia which causes abnormal and uncontrolable movements and can be permanent it can also cause the person to have a stroke and they are unable to regulate their body temperature so any fever can be life threatening. This is a medication for people who have schizophrenia although your son may seem to of been schizophrenic he is and was not. What he was , was having an allergic reaction in his brain causing the nerve impulses and receptors to go haywire and causing him to hear and imagine things. The mistake that many doctors are making is by prescribing meth users with drugs that were intended for people who have a natural chemical imbalance in the brain causeing psycotic problems your sons is not a natural imbalance your sons is chemically induced which was causing the damage. If I were you which I am not and we each have our own way of doing things so just remember I am saying if it were my son I would first get him drug tested since with time he should be getting better unless he is still using meth every now and then. Each time he is or were to use meth even just a little bit will cause all his problems to reoccur and you go back to square one on his recovery . Second I would look into some other type of medication or even no medication really and just get him healed naturally with lots of rest and plenty of vitamins and supplements and some counseling. Thats just me tho. I look at meds dealing with ones brain just like any other drug kinda like giving someone heroin to get them off of coke. or the other way around. It is still a drug and cant be good for him. Doctors like using patients like guinia pigs and have no real way of knowing what the long term affects are going to be on each person. The pharmacuetical companies will come out with a drug and give free samples to doctors and who knows what else so they will try these new drugs and old drugs on thier patients. Anything that can cause a secondary reaction should tell people something like that drug isnt good for your body. Your brain and body is a walking living pharmacy and if taken care of will pretty much take care of itself on most things. My mother in law is 90 years old and had never seen a doctor she never has taken any type of medication and only will use herbs and teas when she does feel alittle under the weather. She lives alone and still gets around just fine. She never uses sugar only something called piloncio or something like that. Never has drank sodas and only drinks natural juices and very little meat. My great grandmother was the same way and lived to be 103 . Now days we make the mistake of putting things into our bodies that we shouldnt and thats why so many people have so many problems with thier health. I know you didnt ask to hear all of this but it might give you a different look at his treatment. Make sure tho more than anything that he still isnt using.

Kind of sounds like delirium tremens. I don't know anyone who has been on methamphetamine, but almost three months seems like a long time to still be hearing voices. Did your son suffer from depression before he started to abuse methamphetamine? I would think that he could be either in psychosis or actually experiencing the delirium tremens.
