I was in a little spirituality discussion yesterday and my Friend mentioned them.I asked her what they were,but she did not go into much detail.What exactly are they?

there are a couple of types, one being familiar spirits, or spirit guides,and then there are the more traditional familiar animals, who got their name because before people had animals as pets,they still had cats and dogs for the purposes of hunting and catching mice, when one of these animals started acting like a pet, they were considered being 'familiar' with you--mostly they are just well cared for pets

term "familiar spirits" is a catch all to condemn everything from witchcraft to Catholicism. saints , demons, oija boards, spirit guides, any spiritual entity that you acknowledge as existing will bring condemnation from the fundies

i have heard of this also when i mention that i am a medium
i think they are "supposedly" demons posing as spirit
