Become one yourself, and then it won't be cool for him/her anymore.

I doubt very much that your kid IS a Goth in the true sense of the word.
Probably he/she is just a kid wearing black moping around listening to Death-metal or equivalent.
that IS NOT Goth - I was there when Goth happened as a fashion ,i.e. the early `80s.Goth is not BLACK ,many wore Purples and Reds ,even white, and as a fashion sprang from what was worn in the early 19th century by people like Shelley and Byron.
It never ceases to annoy me that today`s black-wearing stroppy teen element get labelled Goth (often by themselves LOL) - they`re NOT Goth believe me.
We had the same thing in the `80s when the Rockabilly revival happened here in the UK and elsewhere - young Rockabilly fans like me labelled Teds later as a Psychobilly labelled Punk.

Definately embrace the trend yourself, ask if you can borrow his eyeliner, hair spray etc and start keeping his CD's in your car. Talk to his friends about all your fav goth bands and ask their opinions on your angst ridden poetry about dying/enless/hopeless/empty love. Finally, argue adamently that you were into the Goth scene first and that he's just following your lead. Nothing less cool than copying your Mom when you're trying to be a rebelious teenager.

Let them go to a few goth clubs. That should make 'em realize how retarded about 85% of the goth scene really is.

Or, alternatively, make him or her listen to Sisters of Mercy and London After Midnight (who ARE goth bands, despite what their pretentious lead singers say) on an 98 hour, brain-destroying loop. Actually, scratch the last one. That will undoubtedly kill your poor kid.

Stop buying them black and white makeup..and the weird clothes. I like the previous answer of becoming gothic yourself, then the kids will NOT want to do it.

If all else fails...just cry in front of them. No one likes to see their parents cry.

I have plenty of friends who have problems like this. its perfectly normal a lot of kids end up following different extreme trends like that but they just blow over over a period of time. Just keep tabs and make sure there hangin out with the right people and not doing anything fishy like drugs n stuff and let them be themselves. It'll blow over you don't see many goths much older than teenagers!

Just a suggestion... you should try find out what his/her influences are and why he/she is pursuing this. try to understand before you try to control. for all you know... it could be a rebellion against being controlled... so trying to control their behaviour may just make things worse. maybe you should lighten up. take him/her out for lunch and become interested in their Passion. even if you don't agree with it. You need to accept your kid for who they are and whether or not you agree with it, you should try to understand. then help them to understand your point of view. Then... see how things go from there. If all else fails... embarrass them out of it. embrace it OTT for a while. go completely goth when you are going out with them. COMPLETELY overboard though. buy a long dark wig and some dark makeup, some fake piercings and i can almost guarantee that they will be too mortified to continue with it all.
good luck.

Take him/her on a day trip to Whitby (Sunday's are best) Goth's are in abundance, but you shouldn't try and stop your kid being one, just point out how ridiculous they all look!

They are what they are!! They have the right to express themselves, it might just be a fad. If your child's happy then let them be - its not like hes out causing nuisance and bullying others!!

Is it really so bad? Young people have to have some sense of freedom/rebellion, and if the worst thing your child does is dress in black, well, I think you're a lucky parent!
