This always confuses me: cows are kept for dairy purposes and also meat, if you eat it. So, having given while they lived, they die. Would it not be a waste not to use their hides for products since the cow is now dead? If the leather wasn't used it would just be destroyed. We still have to have cows for milk.

A great number of such hides are wasted because there's not as much demand for the product since the development of alternative materials for making the products that can be made from a cowhide.
You'll recieve all sorts of cynical and nasty replies from people who do, or who pretend to, practice vegitarianism. And they're partially correct, if you can overlook their nastiness. We really could, if we so chose, do just fine without cows milk - but ugh! What a boring world it'd be without ice cream, right? And cheese - that's an important food in many parts of the world - parts where it's not at all easy to afford the luxury of a vegitarian diet.
Yes, I said "luxury". Most human beings in this imperfect world MUST consume whatever they can turn into food, such as cheese, because they cannot AFFORD the wide variety of plant foodstuffs that're needed for a healthy vegitarian diet and they can't produce all they'd need locally, anyhow. The population of the Third World actually outnumbers the rest of us by quite a wide margin. So, although Americans can readily make do without using cows or their milk for food, that just isn't so elsewhere.

Did you know they breed special cows for very expensive car interiors, the car manufactures need hides with no flaws on them i.e.no barbwire snags, no other animal bites etc. Dont know what they do with the meat after they slaughter them. Animal skins are like furs, the last owners died in them. All that just make a poxy car seat or coat.

In a perfect world we'd make leather form the hides of cows who had died of natural causes in a pasture. However, that doesn't happen.
