Is it because I can't close the lid on the scanner? It will scan but there is no image there to work with....

It must be saved as a .jpg file then you can transfer it. So when you scan it into your computer and you should have an option where to store and how to store it. Save it as a .jpg then transfer. Have fun. Sorry I don't have a scanner but I'm a geek too sometimes.

With an object it's better to photograph it with a regular digital camera.

Some scanners get confused if their electronics can't identify a flat object like a document on the scan bed. If you can switch off that "automatic" part of them, you may get a better image, but it can be difficult. Also the depth of field is very limited - even if you get an image of your object, it may be blurry.

does it actually scan with the lid open? if so could maybe try to fool it by placing something opaque over the thing...

although for a 3D object it's best to just take pic, even if it's with just a cellphone camera...

You can if you can figure out how to make something "JPEG". If you find out, let me know!
