As long as you look dressy and you feel good, go for it. Now jeans may not be your best bet but anything else would prob work great!

Yes, you can wear trousers. Is this party organized by your employer? If yes, avoid really low necklines and overly sexy clothing.
You could wear black trousers (either a nice thin wool fabric, or something dressier such as velvet or a heavier silk) and an elegant top with beading. Some nice accessories (jewelry and a clutch evening purse), patent leather pumps and an elegant shawl/wrap can complete the picture.
On the other hand, why not wear a skirt or a dress? For most people, there are not too many events that encourage dressing up anymore.

it depends on the formality of the setting and who sent the invitation
if the Party is held someplace like an very expensive hotel or a luxury yacht. or if its being held by some socially conscious prominent person like the president of the united states
go with the cocktail dress
otherwise its OK for a woman to wear dressy separates (blouse & skirt or blouse and trousers) Dressy is the operative word though. No jeans or tennis shoes.

This year in particular velvet gauchos or palazzo like pants are in style . I'd keep away from jeans. A nice dress pant is always good too, paired with a pretty blouse or jeweled sweater or top. Take a look at the fashion magazines for now and put together a look that suits you.
Just remember to give it a little sparkle either with jewellery, your handbag, shoes or top or jacket.

Every guy I know wears pants, and a shirt, to a cocktail party. Shoes, too! Socks, too!

Don't wear jeans of course, but nice black slacks with your blouse (not shirt), will be fine.
